I recently won a decent sum of money from the lottery, so I've decided I'm going to go whole hog into building my 30k Word Bearers army. I've already got the books, all the regular guys I'll need, and a couple of Mortis-Contemptors I've converted from BaC models for the army, so what next? I'm looking at picking up 10 Gal Vorbak and Ashen Circle, Zardu Layak, a couple of Deimos Rhinos, a MKIIb Land Raider, Erebus and Kor Pharon, and Lorgar. What else should look at purchasing? I'm working with a budget of about $1500, so I'm not looking at Titans, but a lone superheavy isn't out of the question (although I question the value of putting all of your eggs into one 400+ point basket).

All suggestions are equally valued, but any sort of tips or list building advice is well appreciated

Typhon super heavy tank. Whirlwind scorpious, you'll need a Spartan to transport all 10 gal vorbak

a spartan, an anvillus drop pod and some quad mortar teams are my suggestions. maybe a xiphon fighter too?

I've been particularly impressed by the quad mortars recently and the anvillus is just the most fantastically useful tool, I can't recommend them highly enough!

One of the potential big draws for a Word Bearers army is the ability to ally with Daemons, so you might consider models for an allied Daemon detachment.

Gal vorbak, maybe some ashen circle but they are not great, a Spartan for the gal vorbak and lorgar.

I agree with the deamons idea too, so zardu layak or erebus would be fun too.

are whirlwind scorpius' really that good? Just so we're clear do you've $1500 after those purchases or including them? Assuming it's including i'd go with a spartan. I also think the gal vorbak dreadnought dude looks slick

well, you already listed Lorgar, so there is your lord of war slot, so I wouldn't worry to much about getting a super heavy. Everyone loves spartans, maybe some Medusa's for some 36" S: 10 goodness, Xyphons are also very good. The word bearer dreadnought (Mahra ghal or something like that) Is great fun. I'm just going on what I've seen and heard from my local WB player.

What I'd fully reccomend is build a "core" to your army (all your tacticals, terminators, and support) and then a "theme" or two. For example: I have all of my death guard Tacticals, HQs, and Terminators (So many terminators that it's a theme of it's own ), and then for the themes I have a dreadnoughts spam army (6 dreads, 3 contemptors, 1 leviathan) and then a "poison" wave (devastators, medusas with phosphex, cham flamers, etc.) This way you get to have a decently sized army with options for play styles. For word bearers I would probably do a core, a Gal Vorbak/Zardu/the dreadnought "spam", and then something like daemon allies or maybe a tank wing.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Personally, I don't rate them. They're definitely good in smaller games and they're cheap. But, once the games get larger, to me they just seem to be eclipsed by better and more effective options.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I think I'll be adding a Spartan, an Anvillus, and some Chaos Daemons to the shopping list. I was looking at the rules for Corbax Utterblight, and he looks pretty nasty. Think it's worth taking?

Hmm.

Tricky, since your primarch is in your LOW slot already.

I'm not necessarily looking to play everything all at once, just to expand, since I've already got a core. Plus, since I can ally daemons, he can be used as an HQ, instead of an LoW.

Edit: on second look, I can't use him as an HQ, since the daemons would only be allies, and not the primary detachment. Still, he looks like a beast.
