So far strike down is a rule that I've only ever paid lip service to. This is mostly in part due to my thinking that it only applied to CC. A friend has pointed something out to me though, and I want Dakka's opinions. He's stated that the USR is granted to the model. And therefore every form of attack it makes benefits from this rule. Therefore it's shooting attacks also gain strikedown. Is this true? Is this how this rule works in this case? To me it makes sense, and actually makes super heavies having the strikedown rule useful.

Thanks in advance.

Reread the strikedown special rule(have your friend do the same), and what weapon special rules do.

Strikedown is: "suffers an unsaved wound from an attack that has the strikedown special rule"

Weapon profile Types lists special rules that apply to that weapon(and thus attacks with that weapon).

So unless the shw has strikedown as a special rule it would only apply to attacks made with the weapon that has that special rule.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

So, you have kind of answered my question....in the rules section that describes super heavy walkers, there is a paragraph detailing the additional special rules they benefit from. They include smash, invincible behemoth, move through cover etc. That is the section that states they have strike down. So you're saying it applies to all of its attacks?

Unless otherwise noted, Attacks do not take on the characteristics of the model wielding them. Some USRs can affect Melee Attacks through Weapons being used, such as Smash and Rending, but Strikedown is not noted for having that capacity.

So what can it refer to then? Why else would the model be given it as a rule?

Strike Down only applies to a SHW's melee attacks, not it's range weapons, due to how the Strike Down USR is worded and USRs interact with weapon rules (weapons use rules on their own profile, model rules only apply to weapons when noted). At this time, the only IK that can benefit from Strike Down is the Crusader while in melee. A future edition might change how Strike Down interacts with model, which is why an apparently useless rule such as Strike Down is on these models.

Strikedown is attacks with this special rule but does not define those attacks like other special rules.

A ShW either presents all attacks, shooting and melee, with the strikedown rule or none of them.

The ShW is making an attack in either case and has, itself, the rule; there are only 2 ways we can look at this:
1) the model making the attack has the rule therefore the attack has the rule.
2) the model has the rule but the attack does not(ever).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

I agree with the above. No where does it restrict what strike down applies to. Strike down simply states that when an attack is made and a save is failed or passed then the effects take place. It doesn't state shooting attack. It doesn't state melee attack. It simply states 'attack'.

I was hoping that if people were going to prove otherwise they'd do so with actual evidence.

The sad part is Strikedown does not state that if a model has the rule it translates to its Weapons, even if just using a Close Combat Weapon. The model has no avenue for translating that rule across.

In a way, giving a model Strikedown is like the Necron Obelisk being able to force Flying Monstrous Creatures to take a Dangerous Terrain Test: pointless without something more.

I would suggest it applies to a SHW Hammer of Wrath hit (since you just use the base profile of the SHW to resolve, and not any melee weapon). I would also make a case for it applying to Stomp attacks, where it's actually kinda useful since you can Stomp on things outside of the combat you're locked in.
