Really want in on the 30k fun, but just can't bring myself to collect Space Marines. So here is my 2000pt milita list. I know it will most likely struggle against marines but I feel it will be fun for collecting and playing now and again. Has lots of bodies and quite a few tanks. I'm not sure how to present them as Abhumans (maybe fishmen) but that will come shortly. Let me know what you think.

Yay! Squats! Or, you know, Beastmen.

Well, you've got 6 tanks, 40 riflemen, 9 heavy weapon teams, 9 ogryns and....20 inept morons with sharpened sticks.

Thoughts:

Anti-tank.....you've got 15 lascannons, which should be more or less enough at 2000 points to fend off an army which isn't too armour-heavy. What it won't do is stop the inevitable apocalyptically scary assault unit (Primarch & Bodyguard) in a Spartan.

The latter is invariably flare-shielded, so you'll need a 6 to even scratch it with lascannon fire and the battlecannons can't so much as touch it. Massed battlecannon fire will destroy footslogging power armour and do a nice job bringing down knights and titan void shields though.

If I were you, I'd probably keep one unit as conventional battle tanks and find the points to upgrade the other to Vanquishers. Armourbane antitank shells can handle a lot of stuff that's really hard to hurt. For that matter, if you can break them into two squadrons of 3, having two battle tanks or demolishers front-and-centre to handle the infantry, and two pairs of vanquishers on the flanks, you put your opponent in a position where he can't point a tank's flare shield (or a knights ion shield) at both of them, meaning at least one pair has a shot on unshielded side armour.

Your force commander....fair enough. Blast pistols are cheap and nasty. I'd take the Power Axe for your power weapon - you're only I2 anyway, so who cares if you take an unwieldy weapon? Alternatively, swapping out the digital lasers and taking a power fist means you go from 5 S4 attacks to 3 S6 attacks..... that's a judgement call but if nothing else the ability to punch through the rear of a tank may help at some point.

Power armour..... A 3+ save is nice. But again, for 5 points you could drop the power armour and take an iron halo instead - giving you a 3+ invulnerable save, at which point 'normal' armour is kind of irrelevant.

I dunno. It's not like a militia force commander is ever gonna set the world on fire as an assault god, no matter what provenances you take, so take all this advice with a pinch of salt...

The Platoon Command Cadre...... what's it there for?

It's not there to protect the force commander - even with carapace armour it's small enough to be easy to kill. You'd do better hiding him in amongst the 20-strong militia squads.

It's not there for the nuncio-vox as you've got no reserves.

It's not taking advantage of the (impressive) weapon options.

It's not there for the morale boost of the standard. I mean, it might be, but the standard is mostly there to give nearby units stubborn in assaults. Which as Abhuman Helots you can do more cheaply and efficiently by spending the same points value on Discipline Collars for the units you plan to use as an infantry screen.

The Infantry Squads.... well, it's 20 guys with lasguns, isn't it? Cheap and efficient dakka. The Vexilla won't do much - if you get into assaults you're going to lose badly enough that a +1 combat resolution won't really help (again, I recommend discipline collars instead) - but standards look pretty. Melta Bombs might be nice - the problem with Krak grenades is that the most likely vehicle to park within easy charge range is either a land raider (or variant thereof) or a contemptor dreadnought, both of which cannot be hurt by Krak grenades.
Good for shredding rhinos, though.

The Levy......yeah. Damn, they're bad. Again, beastmen models? Put them between you and something scary and....well, they'll be killed. And they'll be killed so quickly it'll probably make matters worse! But at least you don't have to worry about them actually passing a morale check and leaving your opponent locked in combat during the ensuing shooting phase.

The Ogryns...... my one comment here is this; as with a lot of 30k units, 'tis cheaper to bulk up an existing unit than to add a new one. Condensing them into two units, one of 4 and one of 5, saves you 15 points even if you keep exactly the same options.

Secondly, you don't need exactly the same armament on each ogryn. Putting one or two guys out front on each squad without additional weapons frees up points, and the only guy who suffers is the one who'll be killed by incoming fire first and will probably never make it to the enemy anyway.

Thanks, given me some great pointers. Will tweak the list a bit today. This is why I wanted to get the list right first before buying anything. Like the idea of the Vanquishers and I will most likely drop the platoon cadre. Thanks for the advice.

Looks similar to my planned list (though my abhumans are squats), one thing that may be helpfull is the faux-commissars to keep your LD from being generally trash beyond that, the tips above are good to.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Yeah was thinking that too. I could drop either the Demolishers down to normal russes and get two standard discipline Masters, can also drop a few CCW on the ogyrns to get some discipline collars?

As to the abhuman nature of my guys I'm starting to lean towards a kind of Innsmouth look. Bulging eyes and flabby throat areas hiding gills...
