So I got a Betrayal at Calth from the missus for my birthday the other day and I've decided they will be 30k SoH.

I've been reading the two red books to work out how I would like to start off my legion and then expand later, Ideally with a workable 1000-1500 pt list from the kit itself.

What I have come up with is this:

RoW - Pride of the Legion

HQ

Legion Praetor (Cataphractii Armour, Chainfist, Grenade Harness) 160

ELITES

Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought (2xKheres Pattern Assault Cannon) 180

Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought (2xTwin-Linked Lascannon) 185

Apothecarion Detachment (1xApothecary, Artificer Armour) 55

TROOPS

Legion Tactical Squad (15xTactical Marines, 15xAdditional Combat Blade, Power Fist, Artificer Armour) 255

Legion Tactical Support Squad (10xTactical Support Marines, 9xVolkite Calivers) 220

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (Plasma Pistol, Artificer Armour, Power Weapon, Melta Bombs) 185

Legion Terminator Squad (5xPair of Lightning Claws, Grenade Harness) 260

Total 1500

Reason behind the choices for the RoW is so I can run the Volkite Caliver Support squad, I've ordered 10 of the guns already and I really like the profile. But I was running into an issue of not having enough marines to fill the compulsory troops, because I wanted to run a blob of legion tactical's. I've dropped them to 15 strong and brought a Veteran Tactical squad so I meet the requirements for the RoW.

Decided because I quite like the Chaplain model I would use him in the Veterans as their sergeant, I had some spare points to spend anyway.

I've got the weapons I need for the Contemptors and a 2nd Calth Contemptor also, Along with a Legion Apothecary I split with a friend.

I'm not expecting this to be a super competetive or powerful list, but it suits my kind of play style and I'm quite excited to get them painted up to try out.

Just 1 question, I'm very new to 30k rules and units, just checking this is a legal Age of Darkness list?

Thanks,

Luke.

What's the point of running them as Sons of Horus? Other than the rule of cool, of course. Personally I'd take some characters/relics/units that are only available to the SoH. Reaver squads are very good, I'm currently converting my two Calth boxes into Reavers. Justaerin Terminators are expensive (points-wise), but also really cool, and you can buy their weapons as an upgrade kit on Forgeworld I believe. Most importantly, I think you should take the Cataphractii Primus Armour on your Praetor, SoH only and it gives him Eternal Warrior for 15 points more than your normal Cataphractii.

The Sons of Horus traits boost Reserves Rolls and Combat, neither of which you're taking advantage of in your list. This list would be more competitive as Iron Hands or Imperial Fists. I feel your Terminators are the only thing that are helped by your Legion choice, and they seem a little unsupported by the rest of your gunline list. I assume your Apothecary is going with the Volkite Support Squad? They will get immediately targetted, they could do with a transport or something.

Hope this has helped.

I wouldn't use Pride of the legion in this list as you take a penalty if you loose all of your veteran tacticals or teriminators. I'd run as generic, 2 10-man tactical squads, then your support squad. also, it's probably limitations of bits, but dual-lascannon mortis seems almost wasteful, I would probably run him as fist/las since your using your assault cannons on the other Mortis. Also, don't forget that regular dreads can take dual Kheres as well once you start expanding your elites, it will let you combine your dreadnoughts into a single option.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Thanks for the replies guys, In terms of SoH choice, its not a rules based one its entirely preference, I intend to get Reaver squads later rather than convert the Calth marines into them.

I see the Primus armour mentioned a couple of times but cant seem to find it in the red books, is this something that is in HH1 only?

the SoH relic is in book 3 or 4, iirc. SoH, like most all legions, should be decided on more then 'whats the best' My only question was why Pride of the legion as opposed to just no RoW.

Yeah Book 4, so it won't be in the red books. Reavers with jump packs are vital though, I'd get them as soon as possible, the next thing to expand your army.

I wouldn't say the jump packs are vital. But, getting them in to the EN lines are. I find the jump packs pushes them over the useful point limit. A Storm Eagle or other mode of transport to get them in is a real must, giving you an additional choice to provide support.
