Hi there. So, a quandry for all the good list builders out there. A TERRIBLE list to try and make half-decent! I'm going to strip and repaint some of my adeptus arbites, making them into an Astra Militarum / Inquisition army, and want to decide on the first big batch of models to start working on. I've also just finished painting my assassins, so I thought the Assassinorum Execution Force detachment would nice way of chewing up a chunk of points so that I can get the rest painted more quickly.

I play in a pretty narrative/fluffy group, so I won't be facing multiple Stormsurges or Wraithknights any time soon, but I wanted to try and figure out a decent starting force. I'm aware that the list below is a bit rubbish even by our standards, though, and it probably needs to be built up a bit. Any help would be welcomed!

++ Inquisition: Codex (2013) (Inquisitorial Detachment) (364pts) ++

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor (74pts) [Carapace Armour, Liber Heresius (15pts), Power Weapon (10pts), Rad Grenades (15pts), 3x Servo Skulls (9pts)]

Inquisitorial Henchmen Warband (175pts) [5x Crusader (75pts), 5x Death Cult Assassin (75pts)]
··Ministorum Priest (25pts) [CC Weapon, Laspistol]

Inquisitorial Valkyrie Assault Carrier Squadron (FW) (115pts)
··Valkyrie (115pts) [Lascannon (15pts), Two Hellstrike Missiles]

++ Officio Assassinorum: Dataslate (2014) (Formation Detachment) (570pts) ++

Assassinorum Execution Force (570pts) [Callidus Assassin (145pts), Culexus Assassin (140pts), Eversor Assassin (135pts), Vindicare Assassin (150pts)]

++ Astra Militarum: Codex (2014) (Formation Detachment) (781pts) ++

Emperor's Blade Assault Company (781pts)
Company Command Squad (161pts) [Carapace Armour (6pts), 2x Veteran w/ Lasgun]
··Chimera (65pts) [Heavy Bolter, Multi-laser]
··Company Commander [Close Combat Weapon, Flak Armour, Laspistol, Orders]
··Master of Ordnance (20pts) [Close Combat Weapon]
··Veteran Autocannon Team (10pts) [Lasgun]

Veterans (165pts) [Grenadiers (15pts), Krak Grenades for Squad (10pts), 3x Veteran w/ Grenade Launcher (15pts), 6x Veteran w/ Shotgun]
··Chimera (65pts) [Heavy Bolter, Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter*]
··Veteran Sergeant [Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol]

Veterans (165pts) [Grenadiers (15pts), Krak Grenades for Squad (10pts), 3x Veteran w/ Grenade Launcher (15pts), 6x Veteran w/ Shotgun]
··Chimera (65pts) [Heavy Bolter, Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter*]
··Veteran Sergeant [Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol]

Veterans (165pts) [Grenadiers (15pts), Krak Grenades for Squad (10pts), 3x Veteran w/ Grenade Launcher (15pts), 6x Veteran w/ Shotgun]
··Chimera (65pts) [Heavy Bolter, Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter*]
··Veteran Sergeant [Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol]

Hellhound Squadron (125pts)
··Hellhound (125pts) [Heavy Bolter]

So, here goes:

- I've gone for a Judge with a classic Suppression Team to start with (DCA are the cyber-hounds), with the cheaper FW Valkyrie as anti-air.

- I've done the Guard section of the list with the new Assault Company formation, that gives preferred enemy to all the units if they target somebody within 6" of an objective, but requires three units and a Hellhound. I could always swap this for a CAD and take something more useful like a couple of Wyverns, but I'd lose preferred enemy. Is that better?

- I've started out with the standard arbites grenade launchers on all the veteran squads, but could easily specialise them into melta/plasma units.

- If I keep the Assault Company formation, is it worth upgrading my commander to Creed, to try and outflank/infiltrate the whole squad. Then I could have police reinforcements zooming into wherever is required?

- In terms of models, I have available more Hellhounds, more Valkyries/Vendettas, Wyverns. Hydras, an Aegis line, Psykers, plus more Suppression Teams and endless character models.

I love it! It definitely feels like Arbites.

I wouldn't call this list rubbish, it has some strong elements. The four assassins are particularly nasty. You've already flagged it, but to make the list better you should 100% take your Veterans with Plasma or Melta, but Grenade Launchers make more sense from a narrative standpoint, so you'd have to sacrifice theme for competitiveness. In general, Vendettas are better than Valkyries, but if you're going to run Valkyries take them with Multi-Laser, Heavy Bolters and Rocket Pods. The Lascannon is mostly wasted because of BS3 and you can only fire one Hellstrike missile a turn because they're ordinance and firing one causes you to snap shoot with everything else. You can tone down the henchman squad to two Death-Cult Assassins, two Crusaders and a Priest without losing too much punch and ride them in a Vendetta instead. I wouldn't waste the points on a Master of Ordinance. It's a pretty bad unit that doesn't make fluff-sense either. Arbites are tasked with keeping the peace, not destroying city blocks with artillery barrages.

Other than that, I love it and would love to see how you've modelled your Inquisitor, Death-Cult Assassin and Arbites.

Yeah, I hear you on the vendettas. I'm painfully aware of how little anti-tank it has, so if I had to save points on the Valkyrie then I was trying to make it a mini-AT unit as well.

Better to cut the MoO and maybe some crusaders and go for the Vendetta to start with.

Of course, I could cut the hellhound and buy better stuff, and then take the vets as a CAD, but I'd like Preferred Enemy...

Ha! There will be pictures - many, many pictures as I p&m blog the hell out of this army. However, to get to that stage I need to figure out what list I'm gonna build!!!

Gah, found another problem with the Assault Company Formation - you get Objective Secured on the INFANTRY squads in the formation, but not on the vehicles!! If they were a CAD, they'd get ObSec on the vehicles too, but lose it on the CCS. Another nail in the coffin of the Formation?

...."This area has been pacified."

I know you're light on antitank, but seriously drop the hellstrikes for rocket pods. Hellstrike missiles are awful weapons because they're ordnance, limiting you to one effective shot a turn. If you do take them, drop the lascannon because you won't get to fire it until two turns after you arrive on the board....which means quite likely never.

OK, how about this?

- Dropped the AM formation for a CAD, dropped the Hellhound for two Wyverns.
- Changed the Inquisitorial Valkyrie into an AM Vendetta
- Retooled the CCS for Melta duty inside the Vendetta
- Given the CCs Chimera to the Inquisitor's Squad
- Swapped the Xenos Inquisitor for a fightier Malleus one
