So due to an early x-mas, I now have basing material. I got some Black Battleground and Brown Battleground from Army Painter's Battlefields. I was wondering the best way to use these to give a nice looking base for my Necrons, which are painted. The models are already glued to their bases, and I have access to greenstuff. Should I purchase anything else to add more detail? Thanks in advance.

I've seen people just glue it on, add tufts and grass, no painting at all.

I personally think unpainted items always look out of place. I would glue it on, prime, basecoat, drybrush.

PS: Vallejo's earth pastes are awesome for quick basing.

I can't quite prime and paint it. My mini's are already on the base, and they're painted. I could try to drybrush without primer, but I feel like it's a waste to do with the Army Painter stuff.

Why can't you prime and paint it?

Vallejo and GW primers will happily go on with a brush

I keep forgetting brush on primers exist. I don't own any and frankly don't know which ones would be good to use. If you have any recommendations, let me know.

As for painting the stuff, I legitimately have no clue how to go about basing my models. The only ideas I've had are A) use the crappy crackle technical paint from GW or B) put some of the basing material on and throw static grass on top. The last time I based a mini, I painted up some foam that I shaped into rocks, then put some snow effect on them, since the army was an Ice themed army. Even then, I didn't end up liking what I did and felt like I wasted time and basing supplies.

Imperial primer from GW is fine for basing, and their technical sandy paints are also not bad - I wouldn't go for crackle unless that is the look you want.

Vallejo have black / grey primers too

What theme do you want? Just gluing down sand and small pebbles, then priming, then painting and dry brushing, then jamming on some flock/tufts is ez mode for basing (kinda)

depending on what is on your bases you could mask off the minis too - like the feet or whatever. I just use regular painters mask tape and don't leave it on for like, days at a time. You can easily cut a few sections to better fit your minis feet too.

But yeah, Vallejo texture paint is great, no priming required either, really. Paint it on with a really old brush you don't care about, or use toothpicks, sculpting tools whatever, just depends what texture you want to try to give it really. Then, wait for it to dry, and give it a quick wash, highlight some of the higher areas with a quick drybrush. And add a few bits of flock or static grass - done.

Looking at your basing materials, maybe you could do a lava field type theme. Use paint on primer, then paint a few small lava riverlets maybe (or not). Keep the background black. With the rocks as volcanic types, just glue some on, dry brush lightly with a grey to help define the edges.

Anyway just an idea, dunno if it'd work with your colour scheme

My paint job a lazy man's job of recreating the image on the boxes. So warriors don't have 15 different drybrushed layers, but 2.

I considered Lava, but I want mine a little different from the store's Necrons. They're lava bases that look like the warriors are standing on a couple rocks over Lava.
