Hi guys,

I'm wanting to buy an army for me and my boyfriend to paint together.

I'm not really sure which army to get. He already has some grey knights. In order for us to eventually play against eachother, do we need to have the same amount of "points" in our army? I vaguely remember him saying something about this...

I don't really have any knowledge about warhammer (as you can tell!), so thought I'd ask on here in the hope that someone can help me!

Thanks!

You'll need to have the same point limit - and to build an army as close to the limit as you can without going over.

Classic enemies of the Grey Knights are Chaos Daemons and Chaos Space Marines - both can provide challenges and interesting opportunities for painting.

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)

Both can easily get slaughtered by Grey Knights.. I'd avoid them unless you really like the idea of being the villain and don't mind having the deck stacked against you. Grey Knights literally have free buffs meant to kill Daemons while Daemons don't and CSM have to pay for theirs.

Now, that's the perspective of someone that likes to win too. Chaos is still a fun army and painting them can be a hell of a lot of fun. There's reasons to have five different paint schemes in one army.

I just don't like Daemons as an army. They kinda bore me on their own.

I do however like Khorne Daemonkin. It's one of the evil factions, but the Chaos Space Marines and Daemons all work together in one book. It's got some methods in it to make some good and strong armies with what I consider to be some of the coolest models in the game. Demons riding Rhinos, Demon Dogs, what's not to love?

Demons are a nasty army for their age, and honestly have probably gotten better with the changes in 7th. I can't remember an older codex aging as well as they have in a long time.

If your just looking to just paint as the main point of enjoyment, I strongly suggest you pick an army that you like the looks of. Everything can get kinda boring once you've painted your twentieth trooper and don't really like the model in the first place.

As such I strongly suggest an army that has different aesthetics to it in its individual units. The Tau have several different models that make up an army as do Dark Eldar. But armies like Chaos, Space Marines, and Orks you will find yourself painting the same model over and over and over with the only difference being the gun and maybe the pose.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

Yeep, if you are in this mostly for the painting spend the 30 min of the GW website and look through the armies one will jump out at you, and from there there is lots of info on the internet to help narrow it down from a fluff perspective.

Harlequins are a small army but can be a lot of fun to paint!

Yeah, if you're mainly interested in painting then the army itself won't make a big difference. If you're interested in playing games against him where both of you stand an even chance of winning, you're going to need to work with him to construct a list that is roughly the same power level as his. Otherwise you run the risk of one army totally dominating the other whenever you play.

Basically pick whatever army you like the look of the most! It seems like your mostly interested in the painting and casual games, so competitiveness isn't anywhere near as important as you liking the army you pick.
