So I just started playing x-com in preparation for x-com 2 coming out in a couple months. It's a really fun game, but I find myself wishing there was a 40k version. Does that sound awesome to anyone else? Choose your faction and start new recruits as fresh guardsmen, marine scouts, newby firewarriors, etc. Has anyone heard of a mod that does this?

I'm a massive XCOM fan. I take it you're referring to the app based boardgame?

Mod? No.
But there's a 1998 game called Chaos Gate that's a little like Xcom.
Well, UFO Defense, anyway.

Yeah, X-COM: Enemy Within is what I've been playing.

It's not 40K, but Deadzone kinda fits the theme, scale, and gameplay of X-Com.

Oooh you're playing the computer games (I had my tabletop hat on - there is a boardgame version of the computer game you're playing - they're both excellent!)
A 40K version would be entertaining though the premise would have to change - I would expect a Deathwatch theme would be awesome (and right up my street)

There is actually a Deathwatch game that is similar to X-com. However, it's a mobile-to-PC port that is pretty lacking in quality.

I would love a 40k X-com. Though maybe more of a battle game then tactical game. Heck, would love if they made a computer version of the table top game.

This is a great game that is about exactly what you want, very highly reviewed by the creator of x-com. They have a deathwatch version.

I'd be all over a 40k XCOM game like white on rice. I picked up Enemy Unknown on four platforms and had a blast on each one. It's still my iPad go-to game when I have nothing to do. Space Hulk is close in terms of gameplay, but more restrictive.

I love XCOM, but prolly wouldn't enjoy a 40k version, most specifically because it will inevitably be a Space Marine-centric (Deathwatch) game.
However, XCOM would be a great platform for Inquisitor or Necromunda. And I would absolutely be all over either of those.

They should make a Jagged Alliance style game where you control a group of Blood Axe Mercs and have been tasked with looting a Titan or something from a renegade guard force. Lots of different Orks with different personalities who develop from experience, loot the enemy for better dakka (bring those meks to snazz up your shootas/choppas), and take out the enemy all sneaky like or WAAAGH! in dakka blazing. Call it Warhammer 40,000: Kommando

While it is a turnbased game and the core gameplay is quite fun for any fans of 40k and turn based games, it isn't something that should be recommended without a serious warning.
The game has been abandonded by the devs pretty much since day one. Half the achievements aren't working (if that) and it has a bunch of other issues. Not to mention being limited by virtue of being a mobile game/port.
Don't go in expecting XCOM. But if you can get it cheap , it can fill the void for a while. Provided you can look past its faults....and according to forums, provided you can even get it to run.
That said, a 40k XCOM equivalent? Where do I sign?
It probably won't happen any time in the near future though, not officially anyway. Though maybe somebody could come up with a total conversion mod.
Even just the XCOM 2 premise of leading a rebellion could work with 40k. Either as loyalists trying to resist a Tau for instance, or a cultist cell trying to overthrow the imperium. XCOM 2 does have a global map, so fighting a larger scale war could be feasible, even though your just running sabotage missions or whatever. Or, I dunno, a forward strike force from an impending invasion for the xenos races....an ork uprising. We just need somebody willing to stir up the mod. And GW to be not make a fuss about it.

Could something like Space Hulk settle the urge? Squad based and fighting unknown opponents while trying to complete objectives.

I never finished space hulk. It was fun in its own way, but it very restrictive. Mostly though, I didn't feel like there was much of a sense of progression other than getting past the various missions. I haven't tried the newer space hulk though. I believe that added more customization. Maybe I'll live it a shot one of these days.
It feels quite different compared to XCOM though imho.

X-COM Enemy Within way, way better than the space hulk game, IMO.
I think X-Com is actually one of the best TBS games ever written. If they made it for 40k... I'd go nuts. Nobody would see me for 3 months.
40k using the Fallout engine would also make me go bonkers! Halo would be good too; would be perfect to play a Custodes (since they're more solitary).

Chaos Gate is now available from Gog.com
http://www.gog.com/game/warhammer_40000_chaos_gate
It's a good game but does fall into the 'all about marines' trap, which wouldn't be too big a problem were bolt weapons not next to useless against them - even the AI tends to default to grenades first.

Random factoid: X-Com/UFO1 was a 'spiritual successor' to Laser Squad (I believe the earliest press announcements actually called it Laser Squad 2), Laser Squad was based (unofficially) on Laserburn, a non- GW skirmish game written by Citadel Miniatures founder Bryan Ansell, from which 40k inherited a fair few things such as powerfists, needlers, dreadnought armour and bolters. Laserburn got an unofficial update in WD called Confrontation, which fluffwise was the forerunner of Necromunda but ruleswise was closer to Inquisitor.

Which Fallout we talking about? There's a pretty nice 40k Total conversion for FO3.
As for the topic at end, yeah Xcom with Guardsmen/Inquisitorial henchmen or Jagged alliance with Scions would be pretty awesome for me.
