Hey all. I've been wanting to start a KDK list for a while, and wandered on to ebay during the holiday season (a dangerous place for a wargamer) and I've ended up with a bunch of models coming my way. I have my own ideas about how to field them best with perhaps a few proxies, but interested in your thoughts.

What I got:

1 Daemon Prince

10x Bloodletters

3x Bloodcrushers

1 Herald on a juggernaut

1 Helbrute

12 DV Chosen which I am going to convert into 5 Possessed + a Chaos Lord and then the rest of the bitz are probably going to get spread around.

Since I am a guard player first, I have no shortage of Cultist proxies and I know I am going to get more Bloodletters eventually, so my initial thought is that I have enough for a Slaughtercult and can throw in the Helbrute as a War Machine to get the Blood Host benefits. The rest of the stuff I can summon or toss into a separate CAD or unbound bits.

What do you guys think? What builds should I use for my initial lists and what should I buy next?

Hello there !

What you should use depends on the style of play you want : competitive, semi-competitive, or just casual gaming.

If you want competitive, I suggest you either take the ''classical'' Bloodhost detachment (as follow) : Slaughtercult +Gorepack + (maybe multiple) War Engine.
Your slaughtercult should be the strict minimum : A chaos lord on juggernaut with the axe of ruin, 2 squads of bloodletters, a squad of possessed (maybe with a rhino).
For your war engine, focus of the soul grinder, and if you take many war engines, maybe some maulerfiend.
For the gorepack, take meltaguns with your bikers.

On the other hand, if you want to build something with what you presentle have, I suggest you consider a Charnel cohort + Slaughtercult + War engine.

Thanks for the tips! Those are more or less what I was thinking. I am a casual gamer, but I'm attracted to KDK for the blood tithe and the unique mechanics of the army so I will be at start out by trying to maximize that and see where it takes me after a few games.

In general, for small games with the limited amount of models that I have now, would it be better to start with a daemon prince in the list and be prepared to summon bloodcrushers or the other way around? I'm worried that if I leave the daemon prince off the board, I may never get the blood tithe in a single turn I need to summon one. Or, if I do, it will only because I stockpiled BT points all game, thus denying the rest of my army (especially the slaughtercult) the benefit of the lesser BT bonuses. And, while DP's are overcosted I think it would be useful to have some sort of beatstick/distraction carnifex in the list from Turn 1.

Thoughts?

The daemon prince on his own is surprisingly squishy...maybe swap him for a Chaos Lord with some sweet upgrades (Kor'lath is my favorite)
