First off: wow.
So you seem to have just about everything you can, and what you don't have is easily enough proxied by what you do have.
To start, i would first come up with a 1,000 point army list for each of you. To be honest, i thought you meant you just got a few kits that someone had already made, not multiple armies lol.
Follow the "1 hq, 2 troops" to start and give you something to grow with. Chaos marines have a few options on how to play based on what you like to do:
Rush forward and kill everything in sight
Sit back, score objectives and never die
Gunline with infiltrators and deepstrikers
Here are some thoughts i have on Marks:
Khorne gives your melee units some extra punch, but only when they charge, so this is best kept on a unit that will destroy what it comes into contact with in the first couple rounds of combat, so they can quickly move to the next target.
Tzeentch gives just a little more survivability. Best put on a unit that already has an invulnerable save, like terminators, possessed marines, or anything with the Daemon special rule as they have a 5+ invulnerable save and making it a 4+ gives them a 50/50 chance of surviving anything.
Nurgle makes your stuff harder to get wounded. A basic marine with toughness 4 gets wounded by a marine's basic gun, the bolter, on a 4, 5, or 6. With mark of nurgle making your guys toughness 5, bolters qound only on a 5 or 6 making the odds that much better Against staying on the field. Another thing toughness 5 gives you is immunity to instant death by anything with a strength less than 10, this means your chaos lord, or anything with multiple wounds, doesn't get taken off the field by taking only 1 shot that is strength 8
Slaanesh makes your guys faster in close combat. This will generally mean you hit before anything that isn't Eldar, Dark Eldar, or Tyranids. And even then, you might be hitting at the same time (Still a great thing).
Named characters- i don't recommend using any of these guys until you have a very solid idea of where yoy want your army to go AND until you have a few games under your belt. Reason being that they are very specifically geared towards doing something (killing stuff like Kharn or Abbadon) or affecting your army in a specific way that could change how your army plays before the first turn (Typhus, Huron, Ahriman).
Now, those are just some basics that i have learned from my experience, results may vary depending on where you play.
Personally, i would forget about using battlescribe right off the bat and stick with pen and paper. Yeah, its not as technical as scribe, but itll help you list out exactly what you have, and THEN use battle scribe to double check your points values and weapon options. The way i write mine is in a notebook specifically for my 40k lists, this way im organized and can look back at previous things I've tried out and remember how they went. I just write down each unit, the upgradee im giving it (including dedicated transports if any) and the prices for everything, and i mean everything, and then write the unit's totql cost below it, highlighted or circled in som3 way. With each unit i write down, i give it some space in case i want to change a few things, but i hold off on changing things until after i write down every unit i want to play with that i think i have room for. If i go over the points total, then i have everything broken down for me and its cost so i can trim as i need.
After you fet a familiar way of writing your lists, play a couple if skirmishes with your son, or go to your local gaming store that sells Games Workshop models, they'll generally have players that come to the store, or they know another store in the area that does.
Another thing i would suggest after you get familiar with your models, and the terminology, would be to use YouTube and forums like this and do your research. People have been playing this game for years ane many of us are very willing to help out new players, its a lot of fun to look at your pupil and remember what it was like when your first started.
A couple of YouTube channels i suggest are:
40kfritz: this guy has been building a chaos army for the past year or so and has been sharing his experiences and thoughts on them ane how he plays. He also throws up videos where he analyzes certain aspects or army buids in the game.
Commissar Gamza: this guy also throws up tactical ideas, and something that i personally enjoy: he shows you how to have your mind in gear for games, hes talked about using models or units that you personally enjoy having just to keep your own confidence up, which is very cool.
Another channel is Miniwargaming. They have battle reports, which are just videos of people playing the game. They even have a beginner series where they show yiu how to play. Battle reports are a grewt resource, so you can learn new things about your army, and maybe youll even see someone running a strategy, or something close to, what you want to run anr this way you can see it in action!
Protip: your first dozen games don't count. This is something that each and every one of us that play this game know in our hearts. For your first dozen games, you are learning the game, the mechanics, your army, keeping track of all the bookkeeping involved in the fame AND trying to pull off a win. Its a lot of pressure, don't sweat it and just use that time to learn.
Alright, im going to bed, it's late where I am. I hope this helps, and let me know if there's anything else you need help with!
(Not to selfishly promote, but: Check out my blog, I've recently started it up and ive been trying to post tactics, quick tips, and some pictures or my own models. My40klife.blogspot.com)
