So I have a pretty sizeable Ork force now but when I was trying to start them I found that they are one of the only armies with no quick buy-in option such as a battleforce. This made it quite a difficult army to start, as with pretty much every other army there were options for getting a lot of stuff for a pretty good discount.

So I'm wondering that if you were starting Orks today what would you buy? It has to be around £90-£120 worth of stuff as this is the mark where GW box deals are, it doesn't have to be a battleforged army just a great way to start a new army or boost an existing one with the best pounds to points ratio you can think of, the Tyranid Swarm set is a good example of variations in unit's.

United King room or

I would would go for something like:

1 x Painboy
4 x boxes boyz
1 x lootas
1 x bikes

All for £127 from GW, so probably available for much less from 3rd Party.

The idea being to have as big a blob of boyz as possible and make them durable as possible.

Proxy one of the boyz Nobz as a warboss. Have a normal nob in the mob to give 2 x klaws. PB in the mob to give feel no pain.

From the boyz, take out the rockkit boyz and make them tank bustas (with another nob?)

Take the big shootaz out of the boyz and proxy as lootas to add to your lootas.

Lootas run all as lootas and add in the big shootas as proxy lootas.

Its not ideal as for someone new to the hobby as there is a lack of a 'boss' model, and 4 boxes of boys is a lot of repetitive painting, but it does have a durable mob, some serious dakka and is not entirely infantry.

-Parts to convert all your boyz to tank busta's
-Parts to scratch build trukks or other transpots for the tank busta;s
-Those plastic deffkopta's if you don't have them already buy them now.

[Edit I see you don't have orks]

Option 1 : -> Buy second hand orks they should be cheap. ( This is the best way)

Option 2: -> This is harder then it should be :\
My first try

Plsticard 5-15£
Greenstuff equivalent 5-10£

HQ
Plastic Starterset warbozz 5-10£ ( ebay is swamped with those, don't buy the expensive GW one )
Or a mek you will have enough of them see below :\

Elites:
Tank busta's ( Tank busta;s are good GW has them but they are way to expensive ) 18£
Buy 1 boxes of boyz convert then into 2 squads of 5 tank busta;s Don't use the Nob body use one of the mek bodies from the loota kit
Ideally you would run them in a trukk

Burna's ( you will have the burna parts so why not use them) 18£
Buy 1 box of boyz use of the above box build into burna's Don't use the Nob body use one of the mek bodies from the loota kit
Running them in a battle wagon or a looted wagon is fun.

Troops ( they are great in low point games, cheap to buy fun to paint and you can use them as crew for your (home made) mek guns if you don't want them as troops)
2 boxes of gretchin: £10 each. = 20 £
you could also go for boyz I would love you to tell that you would have to have boyz. But really they aren't that great at all.

Ideally you would also want some mega nobz in trukks No idea how to get those in your budget.

Fast
Deffkopta;s are good but GW doesn't produce their plastic ones any more ( they used to be in the starter kit)
3 deff kopta's on ebay = ~ 15- 20 £ (and rising!)

Heavy
Loota's
3x box of loota's = 46,50£
Loota;s are good but you only get 4 in a package so this will give you 12 loota;s
3 meks parts and 12 burna parts

This was the end of your budget you would still need transports and some killy units like some mega nobz or perhaps boyz but they aren't really that good.

Build some transports yourself or buy
1 Battle wagon
3 Trukks or looted wagons if you manage to have the free slots for them (use cheap second hands rhino's as a base for the conversion)

Make your own mek guns Mek guns are guud but way to expensive

I have Orks! I have 15k points of Orks, most of them from Ebay.

I read the OP as the best combination of existing box sets rather than the overall best way to spend £120.

Yeah, I was asking what the most cost effective buy-in option for Orks is for a new starter.

Going with GWs standard prices something like
1 Box of Nobz to make a Painboy (very easy to make a kitbash painboy from the kit) and 4 Nobz for your boyz squads
2 Boxes of Boyz for Slugga/Shoota boyz.
2 Trukks to transport said boyz across the battlefield
1 Box of Warbikers as they are a good bread and butter unit in most army lists.
All of this is around 120 pounds at full retail price but you can find an online seller who sells for roughly 20% off MSRP (in the US its generally 20-25% off, not sure how UK sellers do their discounts). Unfortunately GW doesn't have any battleforces or box sets for Orks right now so :(. If your interested in a Snake Bites theme army you could use the new Greenskinz box for Fantasy/AoS. The feral boyz are slugga boyz, boar riders are bikers (slap some shootas or big shootas from a boyz box on the side to act as their guns), and the chariot could be a trukk.

Going forward the best way to really stretch your money with Orks is to look for 2nd hand models and to make liberal use of kitbash and scratch builds. Nobz box and Boyz box can serve as the base for a lot of different Ork units (like the always desired Tankbustas), same for looting used transports from other factions to count as trukks that have been looted. Orks being a horde army tend to get fairly expensive but there are a lot methods to avoid overly expensive models.

Second try.
Lets start with a good 500 pt army and see if I can fit it in 120 pounds.

501 point army
++ Orks: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) ++

+ HQ +
Warboss [Gift: Da Lucky Stikk, HQ, Stikkbombs]
··Mega Armour [Power Klaw, Twin-linked Shoota]
You need to build one or buy a single Mega nobish model on Ebay.

+ Elites +
Tankbustas The GW finecast ones (25.50) you could build them out of boyz + rokkit louncha bits. But these models look great and it seems to fit into your budget.
··5x Tankbusta [5x Rokkit launcha, 5x Stikkbombs, 5x Tankbusta Bombs]

+ Troops +
Boyz -> (£18)
··10x Boy [10x Choppa, 10x Slugga, 10x Stikkbombs]
Gretchin ->( £10)
··10x Gretchin [10x Grot Blasta]
··Runtherd [Grabba stik, Slugga, Stikkbombs]

+ Fast Attack +
Deffkoptas (ebay)
··Deffkopta [Choppa, Twin-linked Rokkit louncha]

+ Heavy Support +
Lootas ( 2 boxes = £31 ) -> You get burna and mek bits for free" that you can use later on.
··8x Loota [8x Deffgun, 8x Stikkbombs]
Looted Wagon (WD) (Are made of rhino's Rhino £22.50)
Looted Wagon (WD) (Rhino £22.50)

For a total of 107,2 pounds. If you include 20% discount ( and pay full price for the Tank busta's)
And you will still need to find an Deffkopta and a Mega Warbozz on Ebay or other second hand source. This should be possible. for ~ 10-20 pound in total.

This Is actually a nice 500 pt army that is quite suitable to extend into a larger force. Most things can get useful upgrades and all units are still "viable" in an higher point ork list.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If you are wondering why I like looted wagons. Sure Looted wagons eat heavy support slots. But you can spam cads now on 7th.

And If you hold it next to a trukk it is the best thing ever.
Just compare this https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0397/46/1430753671396.jpg with the unit entry for trukks in the ork codex and look at it as a 7pt upgrade that gives you +1 front and site armour.

Pretty much every ork unit that isn't a vehicle can be bashed from the Nob or Boys kit.

If you get the loot as/burnas box and an additional box of boys you can build the loot as and then use the legs from the boys box to kit bash the burnas. That way yo kind of get 2 for one.

Probably my favorite thing about orks is being able to use my left over bits from other armies to kit them out. Looting

Nobz box, just for converting Nobz in mobs and characters. I've made painboys, big meks, snikrot, and a few others just out of spare bitz from this kit.

Bikes, bikes, bikes. Orks love to jink, don't hurt none.

Lootaz. With an ADL.

Then anything else would just be preference. Now I began my collection with Trukks and lots of foot boyz. How I wish I did Bikers instead.
