Hey, folks.

I'm looking to get back into 40k...I haven't played since before 7th Edition came out. I've still got plenty of DA, DE and Nids to finish painting but I really like the look of the AdMech/ Skitarii models. They look fantastic!

Happily, I have £100 of store credit with an online retailer

The Start Collecting! Skitarii Box would seem like a no brainer for the £40 that I could get it for, but what would folks recommend I spend the other £60 on?

I don't have codexes for either AM or Skitties, so I suspect I would need to pick up one or both (I know the SC! S box comes with a formation but I don't think it has the rules for the models. Could be wrong.)

Would it be worth picking up two of the Start Collecting Boxes or would it be better to grab some other boxes instead?

Thanks and apologies for the rambling.

I think that a good start would be 2 start collecting boxes and maybe a Dragoon if you can afford it.

3 of the boxes isn't a bad way to go.

Unless you can find a Skitarii Battle Maniple. If you can do that--get that plus the box.

I hate that the flesh tearer detachment is used for that. I really wish GW had never made transports available outside of units.

If you can find a Skitarii Battle Maniple at your local store or something, that is a good investment. If you get that you effectively have every kit from the Skitarii line. The reason I say "if" is because it just recently sold out on the website and at a few locations, so you'll have to get lucky. But that was very recent so you might still have a chance at finding one,

Also, I should note that the Tech-priest Dominus (the hunched over guy) is not technically part of a Skitarii force; he's from the Cult Mechanicus codex that, due to GW's marketing, is considered a separate book. There are formations that let you use the two together but just note that he can't serve as a normal HQ if you want to use the Combined Arms Detachment.

As for other models, look into the Cult Mechanicus book for other fun stuff, including the battle servitors and Kastellan Robots. Another good addition is an Imperial Knight, which I think can be taken in an allied detachment of 1 or a Baronial Detachment of 3. Knights are very fluffy and can either supplement a force, or make a good central anchor for your skitarii to assist.

Thank you for the replies.

The store I have the credit with doesn't have the Maniples in stock so that isn't an option, sadly.

Then go for an Imperial Knight never hurts.

Make sure you get the newer Warden Kit. it's literally the same as the cheaper Paladin kit but with another sprue for all the new weapons.

The new bundle for Skitarii has a formation for the tech priest to be taken with skitarii, something to consider.

@HoundsofDemos: Yes, that seems like a good way to ease myself back into the game.

@ME7K: Ah, thanks for the tip on the Knight. There do seem to be some other stores around in the UK that still have the Skitty Maniple bundle but I'll have to see how quickly I can get more funds.

My first purchases then are:

Both Codexes and two Skitarri Get Started! Bundles. That takes me a little bit over my £100 but seems like a good springboard.

I've made a note of all the suggestions for future purchases, however. Thanks again, guys.

If you want to run solo Skitarii, you want troops. They are your bread and butter in this army, and are the majority of your damage output.
Plasma Caliver vanguard to kill av12 or less and most MC's. Arc rifle vanguard to kill basically any vehicle in a single shooting phase if you get into rapid fire range. Even basic vanguard can put a serious hurt on just about anything with a T value because of how radium weapons work.
Rangers are excellent against anything not MEQ. Take a 5 man squad with a pair of arquebus and snipe characters/special weapons to your heart's content. Especially potent against artillery as with precision shots you wound the model, not the unit.
The Dragoons are the better of the two bipeds, mostly because they're your only fast attack. Both the lance and the gun have their place. Lance version will kill just about any not Land Raider on the charge with all those hits, and are also good at harassing backfield due to speed. Rifle form is nasty, with 2 shot snipers that cause double wound -and- rending on 6's.
The Dunecrawler is good, but (IMO) the stock weapon and the phospor gun seem meh. The icarus array will swat just about any flier/FMC out of the sky with laughable ease, and the neutron beam is a scary threat for anyone. A trio dropping 3 Str10 ap1 conussive blasts is a great way to soften your opponent before charging.
Your Sicarians are kinda meant to be sent in together. Infiltrators debuff and soften with dakka, ruststalkers hit like a brick. An extra sneaky addition is to charge in a naked vanguard unit for a triple-whammy.

Have fun, praise omnissiah.

Well I would prefer to run AdMech and Skitarri as 'one army' but from what I understand there is sethomg of an issue with Transports if I go that route.

Runnin up on ya.

So Ad Mech doesn't have transportation options? Seems odd.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

What will you do with your second Dominus ?
If you buy the "start collecting !", you have a formation to play the Dominus without having to buy the cult codex.
And you can sell your second Dominus if you buy it twice and don't wan't to play twice the same formation in your army.
This way you can buy a lot more skitarii, but only if you don't want cult mechanicus....

Isn't Cult part of the AdMech Codes ?

I'm interested in both AdMech and Skitarii so I'm sure I will find a use for the second guy.

I think he can go with the Robots, for one. I think lol

Kastelan Robots are Monstrous Creatures, so can only be joined in one formation(Cohort Cybernetica).

There are two formations which require a Dominus though.
