Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

The suns were beginning to rise. The night was getting brighter. The firsts rays of the Three Sun were cutting the darkness like blades, like the shining gaze of the Emperor onto the advancing 2nd company.
It was a good odd. Or at least the Chaplain Vario thought so.
There was no sign of the enemy. The 2nd Company of the Ultramarines were dispatched to this world to verify if the reports of Chaos activity were real.
Captain Gavriel was in charge. He was leading a Gladius Strike Force with some elements of the 10th company as support. He was following the action from the orbit, keeping his watchful eyes on his brothers. His command squad was reading their weapons and some other brothers was caching their meltagun. Some servants were checking the 4 drop pods on the bridge of the vessel. The scanners were watching the 5 razorback that were advancing in the dark.
A voice erupted into the vox of the Commander: “They are everywhere, they are awaiting us”
The biker scouts spotted the enemy waiting behind an old wall and strange ruins.
1 Land Raider and 3 Hellbrute were waiting concealed by the night.
There were also a dozen of men in red robes performing some sort of ritual behind the wall.

This force was here to meet them, Gavriel had no doubt. He seized the initiative with a full scale advance.
The Devastator disembarked from their transports and took defensive position. They readied their Heavy Weapons, one squad with Lascannons and one squad with Missile Launchers. The scout awaited hidden a little forward, keeping an eye on the enemy reaction, there was none.
Devastators opened fire onto the enemy’s position but the darkness was a precious ally for the chaos force, they manage only to hit a Hellbrute, cutting off one of his heavy armoured legs. It was immobilized. Gavriel sent his orders. A scout squad has been left behind to cover their way of retreat, while the razorback move forward. The first 2 drop pods left the Vessel, landing exactly were Gavriel wanted. They opened fire with their meltas on the Landraider but again the night was dark and the landraider was successful in his disengage manoeuvres.
A landspeeder moved full speed and unleashed his loadout on the enemy Landraider, managing only to scratch his front armour but shocking the crew.
(He managed to make a lot of his cover save for night fighting).
Gavriel hissed, he has done a grievous error. He focused his fire on the Landraider and didn’t managed to get him off the battle.

The Chaos answer was quick. A strange noise erupted from the Land Raider and paralyzed in horror the squad of marines that was reloading their weapons getting cover near their drop pod. A howl, a terrible bloodlusty howl came from the Land Raider. Kharne, the mighty warrior devoted to Khorne, threw himself out in a frenzied charge, followed closely by his fellow Berserkers. After a few moments, the Ultramarines were no more, 5 men laid on the ground or at least their butchered remains. An Hellbrute turned his torso and opened fire on the Landspeeder, but the pilot was quick and his reflex good, while he was dodging the shot he saw the Hellbrute charging him. With an explosion, the Landspeeder was no more. With a thunderous leap, the Landraider began to move again.
On the vessel, a launching bridge was malfunctioning and the servos rushed to repair it.

The drop pod of Gavriel begin its descend in the atmosphere, following the signal emitted from the Scout Sergent Joah. They landed badly and deployed rapidly. The Standarbearer and the meltaguy up front. Gavriel was checking the situation when his squad opened fire on the Hellbrute, partially concealed behind a wall and not damaging it (anyone was thinking about 5+ cover save?). With a shriek of despair the cultists broke during their combat with a squad of marines and they were annihilated while turning their back on the battlefield. The Devastators didn’t manage to destroy an Hellbrute while the other dint managed to penetrate the hull of the Landraider.

Gavriel was still looking around trying to localize Kharn when he was found by him.
But his attention shifted to his right, an Hellbrute smashed in the flank of his units tearing apart a veteran in the same moment that Kharne was on them. The first salvo of pistol rounds took down the Standardbearer.
The following moments were pure chaos. And it was over soon. Kharne was unstoppable, the aura of the Blood God protecting him from every blow. Gavriel was exhausted. He flung his sword at Kharne 4 times. The sword, an Ancient Sword shining with the light of a flame bound in his soul, stopped 4 times at 1 inch of Kharne body. It was not is day. Gavriel took a moment to pause. Around him there were no one of his brothers still alive. He was alone. His shield raised and moved in a mechanic scheme. He parried and dodged more than 10 attacks, but eventually succumbed to the outnumbering berserkers.
Suddenly two shadows passed on the battlefield. 2 demonic dragons put to flame two entire squads, no one survived.
From the nowhere 6 mutant hulks, known as Obliterators in imperial records, made their appearance. They unleashed hell, tearing apart the Devastators in the backfield.

The Ultramarines were doomed. Their Leader was dead. The troops disembarked from their Razorbacks and tried unsuccessfully to kill the Obliterators, aided by the snipers and the Heavy Bolter mounted on their veichles.

The battle was over soon. The ultramarines could do only one thing. Die as they lived, in honour and with courage. Every man fought till their last breath, and only a small group survived to see the 2nd company reinforcements arrive and the Chaos forced to flee, badly wounded but as winners.
