Had been umming and aahing over it or Guildball for a while, but the available starter and my prospective opponents stated preference for something a little "lighter" has lead me to this.
Any advice for a noob? Any useful resources, recommendations for subsequent purchases or things to look out for?

Starter box was a good purchase, it's everything you need really.
As for future purchases, find a team you like the look of, or the playstyle of and take it from there.
Rebs, Nameless, Convicts and Hobgoblins are the power teams currently, ones to watch out for, especially in a league. Balance is pretty good though, they're not unbeatable.
Easiest team to play is probably the Syphr, they're humans with better speed and a useful tail swipe ability, straightforward all-rounders.
Avoid complex stuff like Robots/ Mechanites/ Koris until you have some practice at playing.
It's a really great casual game, very easy to paint up a team in an evening or two and give it a try.

Thanks SS, is there a web page somewhere which sums up the play styles etc of the teams? I assume they're somewhere on the Mantic page, but can't see for looking. In terms of recruitment it'd be great if I can get familiar enough to say "oh, you like X style/faction in your existing game, why not try y team?"

Thanks, I'd seen that and there seems to be good info there, but the site seems horribly formatted for mobile platforms and I had a hell of a job clicking through to the actual articles on ,y tablet.

Strategy wise, and speaking from personal experience, do not get so caught up in moving the ball to the goals that you forget that the ball will come back into play while your players are still where they are when the goal is scored.
I have said it before, and I will say it again - Dreadball is one of the best games that I do not like.
But scoring that point, only to have set up the opposing player for three goals?
That moment was freakin' golden! (Not being sarcastic at all - it really was wonderful. I wish that I liked the game, just so I could do the same thing to somebody else....)

It was also the moment when I realized that the game had depth - and that you needed to plan three and four turns ahead.
It felt exactly the same as when I was caught by a Fool's Mate in chess. A golden moment of 'wow, I did not see that coming.'

HAHAHAHA , I actually used that at a national chess tournament in highschool, I took fourth place after going in unranked . I am such an Uber Geek . Sad thing Is I had to show the opponents after the game how it was done because they never had seen it before. They had every type of attack and defense strategy memorized but had no clue on that...........Sorry, reliving an epic win in my life there......carry on.

See, I find dreadball easiest to play by smooshing the other team for the first three rounds or so...then go for a score.

My good lady topped her league... and with a dwarf team. (Dwarfs, in general, did not fare well... but her Brokkers were the exception.)

As a long time Dreadball player, and new Guild Ball player, you are correct in Dreadball being "lighter".
Guild Ball is considerably heavier.
Light / heavy is not good or bad, it's personal preference. I like them both, a lot.
In fact, I'll be in both the Dreadball tournament and the Guild Ball tournament at Adepticon in April.
