This is an army that I painted over the course of quite a few sessions.

For this force, we went with a sort of combined interpretation for Salamander skin- they have an African skin tones with the yellow hair that older Salamanders have had, but not the drow skin or eyes that some of them have.

The force was started before the more recent wave of Salamanders. The skin tone and hair colors clearly changed back and forth as the fluff has been developed (and maybe some of the 'Eavy Metal painters didn't get the memo).

Also, on the fire you'll notice that the flames that are painted on to represent artwork are largely done backwards (as hotrod flames often are). I did do the correct lighting on any of the actual flames the minis are displaying.

Anyway, here's pictures of the force, all in one place:

I love them nice job, how the hell are some of those raptors staying up.

I need to go to work every day.

Each of them is anchored with a very solid and sturdy metal pin. Some of them have had this pin covered up by green stuff sculpted lava rocks (others you can see).

Of course, the poses would make the minis way too top heavy, so I put a nickle into each and every base (nickles fit perfectly into 25mm non-slot bases). This keeps their center of gravity low, and allows them to stand up straight.

I did those minis a while before the 32mm bases became something marines did- and I honestly think the larger bases would have helped just as much as the nickles.

That shade of green looks like the best salamaders ive ever seen. Usually people do the neon green for the BASE color rather than highlights, which makes them look a little cartoony.

Also great lava!

These guys look amazing!
The light effects reflecting from the lava you did on some models are really nice and realistic, far superior to most vulgar "spray on OSL" people keep ruining their models with.
The first scout is a beautiful example of that.

My favourite is the jump pack guy half falling and half sitting, but still keeping his cool. He got all the qualities of a cat trying to ignore the fact it just made a fool of it self and stay true to its dignity.

Its really exiting to see a personal and neat army like this in the sea of bland air brush armies being massproduced and displayed as comission ads.

(oh, and if you did use an air brush -i think you might have on the tanks at least, you did it the right way and didnt stop at that).

I've always loved the green used on this force. Is this army "done" or is your client still adding to it?

By the way, I don't own an airbrush.

And I agree that the way to use an airbrush (as with any technique) is to do it well enough that it doesn't look like an airbrush.

Thanks.

Honestly, I'm not against the brighter green as well- and I've done that on other Salamanders forces I've done. I really love doing different takes on the same basic design, and I think that all of them are quite recognizable as Sallies. Here are two different bright greens I've done for Sallies:

There's just a lot of range that any give chapter has available, and it is really fun to find ways to make them unique.

Thanks.

The school of thought that I try to keep with on my OSL and other illusion-type effects is to try and actually fool the eye, and if I'm not doing that, figure out why. I think the greatest praise one of my OSL works ever got was a request that I take another set of pictures in normal light.

This one is now finished (I think). I won't preclude him from adding to it, of course. I'd honestly love it if he had me do the Primarch.

I love the first scout model pictured. Its Iconic for Salamanders.

I think the Land Raider Multi-melta and assault cannon need their barrels drilled out. The sniper scouts could also use it too.

That first scout is one of my favorites.

He is a 'counts as' Torias Telion (I used Telion's bolter and head).

My client had an idea that he should have a ghillie suit- but we'd already well established the magma terrain we were using for the army, so most things you'd normally do with a ghillie suit were out.

I was able to make his after quite a bit of thought, and a little justification with the burnt tree.

My client had also requested the pose, and that worked terrifically with the lava pool in front of him (it just lights him so well, you know?).
