Almost every time I read a thread on dakka or FB post or whatever about orcs in KoW, someone always says something about having to compensate for their low Nerve rating. However, Ax have the same nerve rating as a KoM shield wall, and Morax and Greatax have the same numbers as KoW foot guard. I admit that my knowledge of KoW is purely theoretical, but that doesn't seem to be particularly low to me. What am I missing?

They do have 1 less point of nerve on their basic troops but they are mostly average on their nerve. This isn't terrible at all, especially when you got units with rally in the army (war drum).

War Drums and Flaggers make them rise to the occasion.

That's valuable information. That said, orcs have the same Nerve ratings as most Kingdoms of Men troops and I don't recall anyone commenting on KoM being so fragile. Is there some sort of synergy I'm missing in either list?

KOM have what I would also call average nerve too, however they are not cannons compared to orcs. KOM also have 9" inspiring which is surprisingly helpful to keep everyone in check.
Again though, nerve changes rapidly depending on the unit AND faction.
In short, the claims of glass cannon are very exaggerated. Armies that rely on regiments of high attack units are glass cannons.

The orc player that I play against most does not seem to have a huge problem with Nerve - but she also is very good with how she positions her Inspiring characters.
She came in second in the league that we just finished, and third in the Drunken Kings league, swapping places with my good lady, who came in third for the main league and second in the Drunken Kings.
*EDIT* Drunken Kings is just what it sounds like - Kings of War with a drink after you finish each turn.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along. |
