I'm going to be very, very honest here. I've not really touched 40K since 4th edition bar a couple of games of Kill Team over the years when GW used to run them at Warhammer World (I was there at the infamous Riptide one! ). So when GW released the new Start Collecting boxes, I thought I would have a go at making a new Tyranid army. It's roughly based one what I kind of think is good and is using the new Hive Vanguard Formation in the Start Collecting box (basically lets you Deep Strike the Gargoyles). I know this list isn't going to be great in all missions but should be quite quick to assemble and paint and hopefully be a bit of a challenge to anybody not packing a Wraithknight or Stormsurge.

Standard Detachment

Hive Tyrant - 2 x Twin-linked Devourers, Wings, Electrogrubs

Hive Vanguard

5 Tyranid Warriors with 4 Deathspitters and a Venom Cannon

20 Gargoyles

1500 Points

It's got plenty of big monsters in it, which should be good on the table as well as quick to paint. I'm a bit unsure about the Hive Crone, but I included it as I would have otherwise have had a Mawloc and it's something a bit different to paint and provides something for Airsupport.

So any thoughts or suggestions?

Whether you're new or a 'nid veteran - this list is utterly fantastic when compared to most others.

Flyrants are considered by most as the best unit in the codex with that loadout, and three of them are going to drive the enemy nuts! Gargoyles are great jump infantry, that although are quite fragile, they can surprise most with their move range combined with rerolling charge. Plus they're relatively cheap, so can happily be sent to absorb overwatch for something else! Mawlocs are going to also pack a huge punch, and also cause havoc in your enemies lines, as will your flyrants. The warriors... probably going to vaporise from strength 8 blasts and krak missiles, but at least they let you take that formation. Mucolid spores are going to add even more hysteria to the battlefield, and could pen some unfortunate tank's side armour if left alone long enough.

A suggestion to consider - lictors. They really really help deep-strike heavy lists, as they grant scatter free deep-strikes performed within 6" of him (I think it's 6 inches, double-check this!) They also serve as fantastic hit-and-run, high initiative, and high(ish) strength character assassins in assault. Just something to consider.

Otherwise, utterly great list, that would have few problems in a competetive background. Be prepared for rage from the amount of flyers you bring too! Otherwise, have fun, and good luck in your games!

The armies that I collect:

- Tyranids, 2,000 pts.
- Orks, 1,250 pts.
- Tau, 750 pts.
- Guard (PDF), 750 pts.

(Yes I have a thing for horde armies to some extent)

Looks pretty good! But... You don't have any "Force multipliers" ie Elites. Personally I would forgo the Crone for now, and add a Venothrope/ Malanthrope, and a Zoey Brood (Zoanthropes) A Lictor or two would also fit in well.

You can always add the Crone back in later, at higher point games.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

Thanks Guys. I think i'll take the advice and try to see how I can fit some Lictors into the list. I really would like to use some Genestealers as well but not too sure how I can do that unless I drop the formation to loose the Warriors.

It's given me some food for thought!
