Hi All,

Been out of the game for about 3 years and am going for my first game back this weekend. All i know about the opposing army is that it will be Orks and the guy i'm facing has a very in-your-face style of play - lots of charges and massive numbers of dice.

Opinions welcome as i am wildly out of touch and can barely remember the more esoteric rules.

long range dakka to stop the orkses getting into range. plague marines hold the home objective, flamer marines move forward to claim another. Pie plates and 'blitz to pop trukks and take out hordes before they can reach CC.

Hey welcome back!

1. Terminator Lord gets a 5+ Invulnerable Save from his Terminator Armor, the Aura of Dark Glory won't stack with it so it's wasteful. If you want a 4+ Invulnerable save you would then need to buy the Sigil of Corruption. That's pretty wasteful.

2. Terminators are in a tough spot, but they can be fun nonetheless. You can't give them a Reaper Autocannon unless you have 5 models in the unit (lord doesn't count), so drop that.

3. I think your math on the cultists is off, unless you mean 11 Cultists + 1 Champion.

For the marines, the guys in the Rhino shouldn't have a Heavy Weapon since you want them to be mobile. 2 Meltaguns works best.

For the marines not in a rhino, well...Flamer and ML is a strange combo since they do 2 very different things. I'd drop the ML and do 2 Flamers, 2 Plasma, or 2 Melta (whatever you want, I like Melta personally). If you have a spare rhino it would be good to give them one too.

4. Heldrake - excellent

5. Vidicator - tough to only have 1, keep it protected. Consider adding a 5 point combi-bolter so that if you get a "weapon destroyed" result it has a 50% chance to protect the demolisher cannon.

6. Defiler - Not a great thing, but if you have the model he could be included, though don't expect much from him. Also drop the extra Havoc Launcher, you cannot fire it if you use his Battle Cannon since it's an Ordnance weapon which makes you snap fire your other guns.

What models do you have for Chaos? I don't want to start telling you do get a bunch that you don't have. I don't think this list will do well against CC. Are you playing any specific mission?

Excellent - thanks for the reply. these would be examples of rules and nuances I've forgotten since i last played.

The thinking behind the missile launcher was that it has decent range and is quite versatile - the Frag missile might be handy as the Boyz close in. This squad would basically set up shop and try to hold their ground for shooting while the squad in a rhino would move up and claim another objective.

I think i'm right in thinking that a power maul is S+2 and Ap4? Those would work pretty well against Orks so might put some of them in with the terminators for the inevitable CC.

I'll be digging out my dusty codex and stuff tonight so I wont ask any rules questions.

The Defiler was basically put in because I've got 2 of them and have hardly ever used them. Would it be better replaced by 2 Helbrutes?

so what models do you have?
never ever run a heavy weapon and a special with chaos space marines since you are forced to sit back and cannot combat squad. if you want horde control you got bolters a heldrake defiler and vindicator you are fine. the termies suck they are just awful unless you have 3 of them with combi melta but thats not going to work because they are pretty bad. there are no reasons why you should be a chaos player right now. srry for being a debby downer but thats the way it is. now if you are playing for fun go right ahead build whatever you want if you striving to win then have fun cause you are not going to win that much so take a salt pack with you everytime you play

I personally would drop the Termies they wont last vs a horde of boys and its a huge points sink to maybe kill a trukk. I would castle up and tau it maybe get a squad of plague marines with flamers or heavy bolters and keep at the back field with the rest of the army and pick off as many as possible with the heavy bolters and pie plates and defiler before they get too close. maybe change your flamer ml squad to a havoc squad or oblits and just plasma cannon or lascannon stuff to death you can have 2 squads of 3 for the price of your termies and Landy. Turn 1 fire all lascannons into vehicles try pop them and then use assault cannons and plas cannons to mop up the boys until they fail moral and run away. The heldrake and defiler can deal with any stormboys or jets they might have.

If you dont have Oblits im sure the opponent wont mind you using termies as proxies since they have the same base size etc. just make sure he knows and is cool with it. good luck

We're just running a simple game because we haven't played for so long.

I do think that range is going to be my best friend - hence why i was looking at a defiler and a vindicator for the pie plates. Not sure if 1 defiler or 2 helbrutes would be the better option though - defiler gives the pie plate, but the helbrutes spread the targets and have similar CC ability, but not as killy guns.

Dont worry about criticism. I've not played for a LONG time and am completely out of touch (although one advantage is that my opponent is too).
