Given the WH40k/HH books that you've read, what book had the best story, and what book had the best fluff.

For me, story wise in a single book goes to Execution Hour. Fluff wise it goes to "The Imperial Infantryman's Handbook.

What about ya'll?

That's a tough one. For fluff, A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns told me a lot about the 1k Sons, magnus and the space wolves that potentially could have been told in a simple article. But the fact that it came out of the novels feels healthier since a lot of it was shown and not told to me.

The Emperor's Gift has a great plot line going on IMO and the first 3 books of the HH were written just well enough that 40k fiction are actual novels to me and not just a marketing jive.

The Armour of Contempt. Best book for showing just how ungodly miserable the Imperium of Man is, and yet how shockingly, horrifically human they still manage to be even as they condemn worlds to death. Gereon was not a liberation, it was a mercy killing.

Best story is shared by the Night Lords trilogy.

Best fluff goes to 5th edition Codex: Grey Knights.

The original and best, Space Marine by Ian Watson, before BL even existed. Starts with life in a hive, charts the selection, transformation and training of Marines, has a dark humour to it, squats, tyranids, eating brains to learn to crew a Titan...it's got the lot!
