I have a FW Helblade that i bought years ago, when i got it i made a flyer stand from a chunk of plaster (set in a tuna tin) and a length of 5mm diameter, cylindrical perspex.

unfortunately I've since lost the base and am considering just buying a standard GW flyer base and stand for it.

My question is - what do other people use to base their FW flyers on? if you use the GW flyer base/stadn combo - how do you mount the solid resin lump on the stand?

Every flyer I have purchased from FW has come with a standard GW flying base. They always come with the little square resin bit to fit the plastic stand in, too. Doesn't look perfect when it's glued on some models (like the Helblade), but its at the bottom where nobody is looking anyways.

i did buy mine, like 7 years ago so it would have been before GW started doign flyer i suppose.

i'm going to Warhammer World on Sunday so hopefully i'll be able to pick one up while I'm there.

Thanks.

Ah, well then picking up a GW standard flying base would probably be the best option, although I have seen some people using brass rods that they drill into the base instead of the clear plastic one, for aesthetic purpopses.

Try asking the people in the FW store at Warhammer World if they can help you with the little square bit to fit the clear plastic into (I dont really know what it would be called. I'm not sure if they tend to sell it by itself or if it usually only comes as part of a whole flyer kit, but if you explain why you need it I imagine they would help you out.

I hope so, I'm supposed to be using the flyer later that day for a game! Lol

Mount it on a clear acrylic rod. It will look much better than the ugly GW plastic bases. Example:

I cut out a cross-shaped hole for my Thunderbolt, using a drill to drill out the tips and centre of the cross, then a dremel to gouge out the material in between.

The Acrylic rod is what I was using. 5mm diameter and then drilled a hole using a 5mm drill bit into the model - worked like a charm.

Unfortunately in the years since I last played I've lost the base I made and i was hoping for a quick fix so i can use the model in a game on Sunday.

Last time I was at WHW, flight stands were online only and you have to order them in. You may find they can. The attachment block is not sold individually though I'm afraid.

Yeah, all the flyer stands (including jetbikes) are online-only. I don't think they're super-expensive, or anything, though. It's also worth asking around a gaming group; some people who build display models will have extras, because they may have models they prefer to keep without the stand (for example, to show it with landing gear down).

I use the X-shaped GW ones. I trace round the profile on the base of the mini, then drill out the slot (as most models have a base plate rather then solid resin).

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Nah, my helblade is old-school and a solid block of resin. the holit has now had to be drilled with a power drill and a 5mm metal drill bit!

Think i'll go the acrylic rod route again. The flying base is a) web exclusive and b) £6. A 60cm piece of black acrylic rod is 90p.

Thanks for the replies peeps!

I mount ALL of my flyers on .5 inch acrylic rod (FW or otherwise).

I use a piece of PVC pipe that is .5" inside diameter, and glue a piece inside the body of the flyer.

Then I put another piece of pipe into the standard GW base (later to be hidden in terrain) and then cut a piece of acrylic rod (get from either a plastic supply or ebay) and use that for a flight stand.

I have based barracudas, tigersharks, harradins, storm raven's, nightscythes and even an orca this way.

Here is a picture of tyranid flyer on such a base.
