hey dakka,

So after playing my first 500 point game today and seeing how everything played out I would like to make a bigger list with a much faster army.

Here it is:

sorcerer on a bike (145)
mastery level 3,spell familiar bolt pistol and force sword (with unit of bikes)

6 x plague marines /w meltagun (218)
Champ /w Melta bombs
Rhino

Plague Marines can take 2x Special Weapons at 5-man, so it is definitely worth doubling up on those Melta Guns. I'd just cut out the extra guy too, make them 5-man.

The bike units are fine, but there's no point to take a power sword on the champ. Usually in a 3-man unit he rides in front since you won't want to lose a Meltagun, so he's first to die. Also Power Sword is not terribly useful against your intended target with the Meltaguns (usually vehicles). I'd keep him naked or with Melta Bombs.

Lastly, the Plague Marines really shine when they are Objective Secured by being Troops. Trying to dig them off objectives takes some dedicated fire. You could take a naked lord with Mark of Nurgle for 80 points, or change the Sorcerer into a Lord on the bike. Either work well.

Ill second Unclean One on that. If you dropped the Cultists youd have 100pts left to grab a Lord or take MoN on the sorcerer with points to spare in both scenarios.

I'd drop the 2 units of plague marines and trade for 2 units of 5-man nurgle spawn (toughness 6 12" 3 wounds)

Keep the sorcerer with no mark so you can roll 3x on telepathy to get invisibility or shrouding, and try to work in another sorc.

If you have the points add a second maulerfiend.

In a bigger army maybe add a nurgle demon prince (he has 2+ cover save with jink+shrouding) and add the plague marines back in as troops choices.

Hey dakka so I have decided to change up the list a bit and up the army size to 1500 points.

now I think this list is going in the right direction now thanks to all of your suggestions.

here is what I've come up with:

chaos lord on a bike (140)
MON, aodg, power first (with unit of spawn)

sorcerer (125)
mastery level 3,spell familiar, force sword (rhino with unit of plague)

4 x plague marines /w 2 x meltagun (175)

I'm wondering if it's worth keeping the cultists in the list or if I should maybe swap them out for maybe something else. (more lord upgrades)

I'm buying a gak tonn of models in the next week or two to complete this list do you guys think I should get 2 x maulerfiends or should I get a hellturkey and just 1 maulerfiend.

I think dumping the cultists is a good call. You can spend another 30 on the lord to get him a Sigil of Corruption (replacing the Aura of Dark Glory), Lightning Claw, and Blight Grenades. Then I'd put some Dozer Blades on those Rhinos, they're a big part of your scoring potential, so you'll want to stick them in cover whenever possible.

Then you have 7 points left I think, so maybe some melta bombs on a champ.

Also you have the wrong points on your Oblits, but I think your math still works correctly.

So I took your advice dumped to cultists, gave my rhinos dozen blades and all my champs did already have melta bombs ( made a mistake) gave the lord sigal of corruption and blight granades but why a lightning claw over a power fist? Do you mean a pair of lightning claws or just one? After all modifications excluding the claw the total is 1478 leaving me with an additional 22 points to spare.

My reading of it was that UncleanOne was saying to arm the lord with one lightning claw and one power fist.

Yes, what Raichase said. A pretty standard loadout these days is to have both a Power Fist and Lightning Claw. They are both Specialist Weapons so you gain +1 attack. Furthermore, at the start of each fight subphase you choose which weapon to attack with. It's very handy to be able to choose to attack at Initiative 5 with the claw or go last with the fist if you need AP2 or high strength.

It's a bit odd, but basically you choose one or the other and all of your attacks are resolved with that weapon for thr round. It's the only way to get the extra attack too since you need another specialist weapon to go with the Power Fist.

For speed, Nurgle marked bikers and/or spawn are great, not just fast but also durable, you could also add bike riding Lords or sorcerers to accompany them depending on what they're going to be aiming for.
Also raptors aren't terrible, just don't pick Warp Talons : )

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

I'd drop the cultists and definitely give your sorcerer a bike so he can ride fast with the spawn (the unit will have majority toughness 6 to protect him) or so you can move him quickly where he needs to go.

List starting to look really good
