2-3 Leman Russes. The hot ones these days are the Pasknisher, the Executioner, and the Exterminator.

A Wyvern or two.

About 40-50 infantry (more if you want to do pure foot infantry.)

Other than that, pick a theme and go with it. Steel Legion (what I play) will have lots of tanks and highly mobile mechanized infantry with flyer support.

Welcome to the illustrious Imperial Guard!

The first thing you will need to grab is a couple of troops choices. I would recommend some Infantry platoons. They can be kitted out with special weapons or heavy weapons and have access to some great orders. You want to have some vox carriers in your units to allow you to re-roll your orders tests.

From there, you can take all the fun toys. Wyverns are very powerful at the moment and it is well worth using one or two in an army. Priests are good too for keeping your units in the fight (especially as Yarrick does not have Stubborn for some reason).

Leman Russ tanks are great too. The Punisher is a great tank, able to put out a lot of anti-infantry shots. If you are using a normal Russ with a battle cannon, you may wish to leave off the sponsons or magnetise them. The change of the Russ to a heavy vehicle means you must snap fire other guns if you fire the cannon, so the sponsons can be a bit useless.

A veteran squad (or infantry squad) or two in a chimera are useful. With many missions being objective based, it helps to have some mobility in the army, especially in maelstrom missions.

The good thing about the guard is that there are a lot of options and styles you can use.

Grab yourself a few Leman Russ tanks. The LRBT is not very good unless you are facing MEQ's over an open board but the Exterminator is amazing at forcing saves. Add in an Eradicator or two to deal with Infantry in cover.
Next up is a squadron of Wyverns for blitzing the enemy and finally about three to five Veteran sections. Equip them with Melta's for tank busting and add in a Company Command Section with a Master of the Fleet to deal with enemy DS units. Equip everything with camo gear and, if you want too, give your infantry carapace armour. to ensure that they last.

Finally I would advise looking at a LoW - either a Shadowsword or a Knight.

You can use regular guardsmen as veterans, there aren't any specific models for veterans, but you can model them however you want.

A great starter army would be:
- Lord Commissar or company command squad
- 20 guardsmen in two veteran squads
- 2 chimeras or Taurox (personally I might use Space Marine Razorback models instead of taurox since I think they're much cheaper
- a leman Russ and/or a wyvern

That'll probably get you up to 400 points or so, enough for a few test games. From there more guardsmen and tanks are the way to go.

This is the 500pt list I started with back in 5th. I think it's still a solid list that will show you want does and more importantly, doesn't work in your play style and Meta.

CCS + LC + Reg Stand + Vox

Vets + 3xmelta
in Chimera ML + HF

PCS + AC + flame
in Chimera ML + HB
1)IS + ML + GL + Vox
2)IS + ML + GL
3)IS + ML + GL

To this add a Vendetta, some Leman Russes, Wyverns and Chimeras, even if they start empty. Mobility will win you the mission when firepower won't.

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

You are correct in that there are no veteran models.
They have various ways to be kitted out, so the models depend on the options you take.

My veterans have the bull-necked beret heads from the Scions kits. They are normal AM infantry models, with headswaps and more accessories.
I think there are 8 heads for each pack of 5 models, so they go a long way.
And, they're official GW heads.

If you want to field infantry, pick up usable Melta- and Plasmagun bits wherever you can, since you only get one of each in the "Cadian Command Squad" box and none in the normal "Cadian Shock Troops" set, and both of them are the weapon of choice for Veteran and Command Squads.

Alternatively, if the prospect of conversions is at all interesting to you, a great introductory project would be converting the flamer that comes on each guardsmen sprue into a melta. This should be good, because melta vets in a transport have remained a very solid choice in most IG lists. Trim the bottom half of the barrel, round what's left over, reattach the hose so that it mimics the appearance of the meltagun on the command squad sprue, and with that you can up the number of meltas in your army quite quickly. Same can't be said for plasma guns, though...

Check out the link above. Snrub has a series of tutorials on how to create special weapons using only the Cadian shock troops box (well, you'll need the heavy weapons team box for more lasguns, but you can still theoretically do it all with the shock troops)
