I'm playing around with the idea of starting a 30k army and after borrowing some books I've put together a 2000pt alpha legion list. I'm looking to make it decently competitive.

ROW: coils of the hydra

HQ

Praetor
Paragon blade
Power dagger
Digital lasers
Iron halo
Venom spheres

Elites

Siege tyrant terminators

Legion terminator squad
Cataphractii armour
Plasma blaster
2 power axes
2 power swords
Sergeant w/
Power fist
Power dagger

Troops

3 legion tactical squads
5 additional marines (15 total)
Legion vexilla
Sergeant w/
Artificer armour
Power fist
Power dagger

Heavy support

Fire raptor
Reaper auto cannons

Deredeo
Armoured ceramite

Sicaran battle tank
Las cannon sponsons
Armoured ceramite

So obviously all the infantry infiltrates via mutable tactics to satisfy the requirements for coils of the hydra. The praetor joins the legion terminators for a pretty good cc punch. Would this list be viable?

here's the deal that most people recently starting a 30k list miss: 99.9% of everything available to you.... is viable. This isn't 40k where you gotta worry about bringing crap units, because in 30k, there really isn't any.

I like your list, though personally, I like larger tac blobs and apothecaries since it basically makes you a massive pain to remove from objectives. With infiltrate being your only available mutable tactic, I'd probably try and fit extra CCWs onto your tacticals to make up for the fact that a turn 2 charge will probably happen, and with only 4/5 infantry units, you will probably want them to have staying power in CC.

A big weakness of this RoW in lower point games is that it limits the AL's best advantage: It's predictable. Your enemy KNOWS that all your infantry have infiltrate, so if he's clever, he will deploy accordingly.

What do the Tyrant terminators bring you that you don't already have covered in your list? unless you NEED them, or want them for fluffy reasons, I'd ditch the RoW and reopen that "supprise" that helps out AL so much. Outside of the fact that it's a flyer, why bring the fire raptor?

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Well to start with the fire raptor I did pick it as it seemed to be regarded as competitive and It provided redundancy so the deredeo isn't my sole skyfire unit however there may very well be a unit that better complements this list. As for the ROW that's a fair point, especially considering my friend who I play a lot plays deamons and a DS centric GK list so infiltrating would be largely ineffective so the option to select another tactic would be nice. What other rite would you pick to replace it? Also since I wouldn't have the 3 troops requirement I could drop a tac squad or replace it with a non cumpulsary troop. I imagine that a delivery system for the terminators would be needed for the times I don't pick infiltrate as well.

One thing I've noticed as I play more and more 30k: You don't always need a RoW

If your friend plays daemons and/or GK, invest in apothecaries who have augury scanners so they can intercept units that land within 18" of them, Volkite squads for that lazer goodness (deflagrate shines when the enemy doesn't have an armor save ) I'd swap out the raptor for a heavy support missile squad with flakk(covers more area and is generally more useful imo) and either a tactical support squad, or anyone of the fun units in the 30k list.

Ok here's a second draft:

Praetor
Paragon blade
Power dagger
Volkite charger
Venom spheres
Digital lasers
Iron halo

Legion terminators
power fists
Power dagger
Plasma blaster
4 volkite chargers
2 power swords
2 power axe

Apothecarion detachment
3 apothecaries
3 augury scanners

8 iron havocs
8 missle launchers
Augury scanner

15 Legion tactical squad
Power fist
Power dagger
Artificer armour
Legion vexilla

15 Legion tactical squad
Power fist
Power dagger
Artificer armour
Legion vexilla

15 Legion tactical squad
Power fist
Power dagger
Artificer armour
Legion vexilla

Sicaran battle tank
Las cannons
Armoured ceramite

Deredeo
Armoured ceramite

12pts left

So I realized that units with infiltrate have outflank if held in reserve and now that I have an apothecary with a scanner in each tactical blob and the iron havocs with a scanner as well I think I could use coils of the hydra and still be able to counter anti infiltrating deployment fairly well by either keeping my infantry in reserve and outflanking or in the case of my opponent going full reserves I could infiltrate into their deployment zone and wait within 18" of their board edge and pour interceptor shots from the 3 tactical squads, iron havocs as well as the deredeo into enemy units as they arrive. This would senergize nicely with the signal corruption from coils of the hydra so less of the enemy shows up each turn. Using the remaining points I added volkite chargers to the terminators for some more fire power and because I wanted some collide weapons in the list for cool factor. I figure this list is a fairly good compromise, i still get to use the rite while hopefully negating most of the inflexibility of always picking infiltrate.

Edit: just realized the scanner only works on deep strike reserves
