This came up in yesterday's friendly game but I'm practicing for Adepticon so use their FAQ if needed.

Ezekiel (Infantry Independent Character) is joined to a unit of Ravenwing (Bikes) and they do a Scout redeployment. Page 171 refers to units and unit types, not models. Page 166 says an Independent Character counts as part of the unit for all rules purposes. So does Ezekial make a Scout redeployment of 12" with the bikes? I can't find any reason he wouldn't.

For clarification: Does the Scout rule specify 'units with one or more models', 'units comprised entirely of models' or something else? Do the re-deployment rules (how far a unit gets to move) specify anything similar?

"...a unit containing at least one...", "If the unit is Infantry, Artillery..."

The rules simply do not cover what Unit Type a mixed unit is, as it's really a model characteristic, not a unit characteristic. The Movement Phase rules include parts about each model moving at it's own speed, but Scout is a Redeployment, not a move.

I think it's like the other threads we've had about what faction a unit is, and the consensus there is that an Independent Character loses his own faction when he joins a unit of another faction. "counts as part of the unit for all rules purposes" is intentionally very broad.

But units don't have unit types. Unlike faction, unit type is a purely model level rule so the interaction with ICs is not as clear. The rules give us no clue as to how to proceed in this case (and many other similar cases, like PE based on unit type). Discuss it with your opponent.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Yes my Colour is Black but not for the reasons stated mainly just because it's slimming... http://imperiusdominatus.blogspot.com

That's a good point and supported by page 9: "each model will have a Unit Type".

sounds good to put in a tournament FAQ. I've emailed a few organizers.

Scout . . . "a unit containing at least one model with this special rule can choose to redeploy"

That doesn't address this thread's question of how far each model redeploys.

HIWPI is models can redeploy as their unit type allows but the unit is required to maintain coherency as normal.

This is the simplest way to play it to avoid shenanigans and being thought of "That Guy".

Nothing requires it, but nothing actually allows you to do more, really. As has been mentioned, mixed type units are very finicky, and only a very few rules address it, mainly Coherency in Movement and the Jump rules.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

FWIW, I emailed the Adepticon FAQ department and just got this reply:
Yes, the models including the character scout per the units type "Bike", so they all redeploy 12".

Regards,

Chris
So that at least clarifies for anyone attending this event.
