Hi! My friend at my FLGS is trying to get me to try out the tourney scene. We have one coming up in March and I think I might try it out. I have never been to a tourney and only ever played beer and pretzel games so I am not all that confident on a list building or game play level. However I figure I might as well try it out. Worse case scenario I get to spend the whole day playing 40k.

So here is my list I am thinking of bringing with questions I have on it at the end. Note: This tourney follows ITC rules (which means every single vehicle I am using has IWND

Chapter Tactics: Iron Hands

Formation: Gladius

Battle Company: They are exact clones of each other minus the captain chaplain switch up so just everything listed has an exact clone in the other battle company.

Command Squad: 1 melta. Bolters. Razorback W/ Twin Linked Lascannon - 120

Devastator squad: Sarge w/combi melta. Razorback W/ Twin Linked Lascannon - 100

Assault Squad: Sarge w/ melta bombs. Razorback W/ Twin Linked Assault Cannon - 95

Tactical Squad: Sarge W/ Combi Melta. 1 meltagun. W/ Twin Linked Assault Cannon - 110

I lose three predators, a techpriest, and the firepower of three preds, but gain 20 more bodies on the table, 4 more meltas (or plasmas) and four heavy bolters in addition to the scout speeder.

The entire list is built around abusing the free razorbacks and throwing bodies/vehicles on the table. I do have some doubts however and seek advice on what to do with my predators.

I am currently thinking of getting rid of the 4th predator and replacing the auto cannons on the other three with twin linked Lascannons. I could also opt to replace the 4th predator with sponsoon heavy bolters for the other three giving them more fire to put down range which would leave me with 15 points. With that I could put a melta bomb on the chaplain and captain + give one of them an auspex.
Lastly I am thinking of replacing the 4th predator with dozer blades for all the vehicles (Which would cost 75 points).

So theres my first tourney list. I think it looks solid, but I know I really do need advice on the predators. The Auto cannons are pretty weak weapons, but I do like the idea of being able to have another predator on the field. I know I could really use the extra lascannons however as without the predators carrying them I have only four. The idea of giving them all heavy bolters is also a nice idea though as thats a lot more dakka per tank, but that is if they stand still. I think the sheer volume of marines and tanks armed like they are should be able to take out most things they come across.

If you like predators, I'd recommend the version with autocannon turret and lascannon side sponsons - they seem to get the most bang for their buck. 4 autocannons just isnt going to achieve much in my opinion.

If you are running Iron Hands Gladius and a command squad without SmashF***er that's bad juju bro. Advice on predators is to axe them, either go suppression force or scouts for aux. You're gonna want cheap. Put Devs in rhinos with 2 grav guns or drop a bunch of other points and find a way to get Centurion Devs in pods. Assault Cannons aren't great, go Las-Plas. Looking to cut points? Turn the Assaults into a single MM attack bike.

The thing about the Iron Hands tactics in competitive play is that A) The Feel No Pain part is generally more useful than IWND and B) rhino chassis that are getting shot at are generally going to die. You shouldn't be getting much chance to IWND things, especially when you have so little actual killing power. The other thing, and this is TOTALLY opinion, is that the free transports+obsec is what makes these combos of units viable at all. The transport isn't really a huge benefit, it's more like it keeps the unit from being detrimental and equipping either the transport or unit for anything less than absolute efficiency still leaves them worse off than the REALLY good units in the Dex(Grav Centurions)

Second, @ERJAK - Youre right. OP running an IH list without smash-fether is VERY bad juju. The machine god with be most displeased.

The Grav cents are the best unit in the dex. The gladius he gets gives him 12x tanks, which isnt bad, but again, its table space. If you want that, drop the rzrbck on the ass squads. Give them a free pods for back field obj claiming. Drop their MB. Theyre there to be annoying, not useful. That frees up 50 points. Keeps you mobile. Give assault squads packs. Land with pod then run to cover. Jump away to troll for taste.

Find a way to fit in Grav cents. Take smash fker. But dont listen to ERJAK... assault cannons on the rzrbck is waaaaay good. Ive rolled pretty damn well with thema and you have to remember, 4 ST6 shots against a T4 term squad with a lucky rend or two will do more damage than 1 possible shot. I run 50/50 with las and assault. I think you had it right the first time.

On Chapter master Smashfether: I do not own any SM bike models at this point in time so he would not be at his full power. Also I believe (but I could be wrong and correct me if I am) that even if he has eternal warrior he can only take FNP rolls against up to s7 hits. He wont be instant killed by s8 or above, but he cant FNP them (His main appeal). As I dont have a bike model I cant do him justice. Also the Iron Hand and Imperial Fist supplements can take SM formations right?


And on replacing the armored force I can see the logic behind that and have made a possible replacement for it.

You're right about the FNP, which is why the T5 from the bike is so important. It can't be understated how good SmashF***er is, it would be worth it just to grab some DA vengeance box bikes off ebay and convert them.

Here's my IronHands Gladius adjusted for ITC no Chapter Master upgrade for battle company Captain BS. Take what you like, ditch the rest. If you do ever use SmashFucker though, don't even bring a model for the BC captain. Completely worthless.

Alright got one more decision to make as I revise and prepare to play test this list.

Combi meltas or plasmas or a mix? Plasma has better range and is more versatile, but the melta just provides me with much needed anti tank.
