Might be a silly question, but can you put two independent characters in the same unit?
For example: a Chaos lord, a chaos sorcerer, both joining a squad of chosen and getting in a land raider.

Yes you can. You can even join an IC to another IC

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Yes. IC's have permission to join a unit. A unit with an IC in it is still a unit.

There are exceptions, such as if one of the ICs is an MC and already in the unit, or other rule preventing it, specifically.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

Another exception specific to CSM is that you cannot mix marks of chaos within a unit, e.g. nurgle, tzeench, Slaanesh or Khorne, with unmarked stuff joining being allowed.
