Hello everyone,

I am starting on my first Imperial Guard (and first WH40K) army around the doctrinal concept behind the Tanith First and Only and with that I'll be trying my hand at sculpting (I have some experience there) so I am wondering if anyone has any links to tutorials, websites that offer compatible conversion kits and the like. I have found a few and will be posting them below.

Secondly, with lore crafting in respect to creating a new regiment of guardsman built upon the concept of LRRPs (think 75th Infantry (Ranger)) and the 1st Tanith (similar respects to their home world making them adept at their particular mission set). How would this influence my army composition? I assume it would mean I'd have a more infantry centered force with special / heavy weapon teams with the odd fast attack to compliment.

Lastly, are places offering a second hand WH40K 7th edition codex and a second hand 6th edition IG codex, or is GW the only place to get those?

Thank you for your time.

Victoria has some great conversion bits for IG. These torsos for example would work well for a Tanith-style army:

Two other sites that have IG compatible bits are maxmini and mad robot:

As far as army composition is concerned, you can do a combination of foot-slogging infantry (I suggest Veterans, with Forward Sentries doctrine to give them camo cloaks and snare mines) coupled with some 'harder' units wearing carapace armor in Valkyries to drop in and put damage on target (Possibly two of them) with a third flyer in the mix in the form of a Vendetta for anti-armor.

An example list:
Company Command Squad with a Company Commander wielding a Plasma Pistol, backed up by a squad medic (for feel no pain) and a trio of plasma guns. Attach an Astropath with a Laspistol for even more shenanigans in the form of Psychic Shriek on the turn they land. Give them all Carapace armor (except the astropath of course) and let them ride in a Vendetta gunship.

Leman Russ Command Squadron - Warlord, with Camo netting on both (or all three if you run a full squadron) tanks, and kitted however you wish. I suggest something that will threaten armored targets but your mileage may vary.

Veteran Squad w/ Forward Sentries doctrine, an Autocannon heavy weapon, and a few sniper rifles, with the Sergeant armed with a bolter. That squad will cost you 87 points total, or 97 if you want to spring for them to have Krak Grenades (a worthwhile upgrade)

Veteran Squad - Same as above

Veteran Squad - Same as above

Veteran Squad - Same as above

Veteran Squad - Grenadiers doctrine (Carapace, 4+ armor saves) with a Sergeant armed with either a bolter (for the cheaper option) or a Plasma Pistol (preferred) with three veterans armed with either plasma or melta. This squad rides in a Valkyrie

Veteran Squad - Same as above, riding in a Valkyrie

Wyvern battery with Camo Netting option (At least two Wyvers, possibly 3 depending on points)

Scout Sentinel squadron, camo netting of course, with either Autocannons (preferred choice) or lascannon. One Lascannon and 2x Autocannons is actually a pretty good build with this, gives you some mobile weapons that while in cover have a 4+ (or sometimes 3+ depending on the cover) cover save.

Valkyrie squadon with 2x Valkyries in it (Suggest you upgrade the missiles to Multiple Rocket pods to help with anti-infantry work) that come in together drop their cargo in a focused location. 20 4+ save guardsmen with 14 plasma shots (if you choose to go with Plasma) out to 12" away is pretty terrifying for most targets.

Vendetta Squadon with 1x Vendetta (all Lascannons)

That gives you a lot of shooting and solid units. It's not the strongest list, but with guard you're going to struggle to make a super hard list anyway. That in my mind speaks strongly to the tanith and brings in a lot of the stronger units in the codex at present.

Hopefully it helps, and best of luck with your guard army. Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Thanks for the input guys, as for the blog I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about that but I'll look into it.

@Red_Thirst

Thanks for the example build, I've been reading through the codex and I'm working on a similar concept to the force (however you've given me some things to look into that hurt my poor wallet :'D), probably will build my army and its supporting elements around certain point caps, 350, 500... ect.

Also, I have been working on some layouts / concept for the all the sculpting, painting and assembly and I finished the cap badge:

Warning: Fairly large image!
Spoiler:

I am not entirely sure what to put as the motto along the banner, obviously something inclusive of the God-Emperor, but I can't get the tune to flow so to speak.

So I run a lrrp /lrpg guard regiment. First things first is that it will in no way ever be the optimal way of playing guard, nor will it be easy to represent on the table top.

The infantrymen themselves will always be outclassed, and outgunned by nearly every single other infantry unit on the table. This means that you must rely on the quantity of your troops rather than their quality. The problem is that swarms of infantry are inherently opposed to the small, but coordinated fire teams that traditionally compose a lrrp.

I have written my own codex in order to better represent the way in which I would prefer to play, but I am by no means a respected rules writer. This just might give you some ideas for army composition.

as for my regiment, the 1st Arkan Volunteer group is ready to provide fire support as well as inspiration.
Spoiler:

recently I have been using the D-99 detachment from IA 4 and it is the best approximate within the official rules.

Your force should be lead by Lord Commissar, if you want Tanith 1st. Look for Brother Vinni's for one who represents Gaunt. (you can find Bragg too)
Or look into my galerry to see one painted (not Tanith thou)

Or use CCS but make the commander to look as a Commissar for maximum fluff.

I was thinking about making the CCS commander look like a commissar but I'd rather make him look like one of the members of the force which has been now named the 1st Albynn Scout Regiment. I'll have my concept list posted up later tonight and I'll link it in this thread.

Ah, awesome idea good luck with it and have fun. Another thought is to represent MKoll's scouts, as elites. Use catachan models (the box of ten) make homemade camo-cloaks ( I use old medical gauze stretched out and dipped in a mix of paint and glue), put scopes on their las-guns (I use the cut middle sections of Q-tips). Once you make all ten, use them as "count as" ratlings, makes your snipers WAY better than special weapon team snipers. A good way to have effective yet fluffy Ghosts. Just my $0.02 brother, good luck.

-Me: Don't tell the commissar but i left my Imperial Infantrymans Uplifting Primer at home, but I do carry a folded Texas flag behind my front plate.
-Friend: Texas flag gives you AV14 all around.

Thanks for the encouragement and idea, I kind of did two elite scout squads in my current draw up of the army; which has been posted here.
