As above, obviously it's a very power formation but I'm curious. I personally run 1 HBC with SMS, Velocity tracker and stims and 2 ion accelerators with Fusion blasters and EWO. How do you run yours? What tactics have you found works well?

Definitely mix your secondary weapons if you're running units of more than 1.

Been running mine with great success with this loadout:
-x1 Riptide
*w/ Heavy Burst Cannon, Early Warning Override, Velocity Tracker, TL-Plasma Gun
-x1 Riptide
*w/ Ion Accelerator, Early Warning Override, Stimulant Injector, Smart Missile System
-x1 Riptide
*w/ Ion Accelerator, Early Warning Override, Stimulant Injector, Smart Missile System
With the HBC Riptide I am relying on the Formation Special Rule to not suffer a wound from a failed Nova Reactor and so far it has paid off, I gave him a Plasma Gun for the range and the assistance with enemy Flyers and FMC (lots of Eldar, Orks and Tyranids at my FLGS). The other two focus primarily on ground targets and have absolutely obliterated everything they have come across, especially with the Hailstorm rule.

Honestly, in the Riptide Wing i would run 2 HBC and 1 IA (i usually strictly use SMS because i rarely am close enough for melta bonus and the higher rate of fire usually benefits me more). Reason being, the HBC is easily more powerful than the IA ... IF! the nova charge succeeds. Without nova charge, its pretty bad compared to the IA. Abuse that rerollable nova test. Bring shadowsun somewhere with her drone to make one reroll to hits of one, or get a general commander and roll for the 12" bubble of reroll to hits of 1 in shooting. Keep the 2 HBCs close enough for the reroll and the IA in the back like he usually is, since the main perk of the IA is never needing a Nova test anyway (but the cascading BS bonus has no range limit)

I had this warlord trait in a game versus Necrons, it was just murder. But I agree with Vineheart, you'll want to use the power early in the game before you lose a Riptide, so smart missiles will be in range turn 1.

My friends don't really have a problem with it. I love the the models being a primary factor in having them and my friends play competitively any way.

I've really only used it against players who are ok with a challenge (Two different Necron players). I don't think anyone else could handle it and would probably not have fun.

Personally, I would only mix if you have 4 or more (2 IA and 2 HBC). You always want to have 2 next to each other for the nova reroll, and HBC tend to be more aggressive and move toward objectives/the enemy while IA tend to stay back by your starting zone/objectives

Technically that wouldnt work. They have to be within 6" of another UNIT not another riptide. The 2 in one unit wouldnt trigger the reroll nova.
IA doesnt even need the nova, thats the main draw of it. Secondly, 36" is hardly more aggressive when you can still never leave your own deployment zone lol.

The rule does not say that. It just says you must be within 6" of another riptide from this formation. Nowhere does it say another unit of riptides.

well...thats odd... thats the only situation ive ever seen where it does say the specific model and not the unit. Even the Ghostkeel one mentions unit.
