Hey guys...I'm a total newb when it comes to painting and I have a small force of Tempestus Scions. I've settled on the color scheme of the Psian Jackals which is primarily black with silver colored armor trim. My question is, with black as a primary color...is it necessary to shade it with washes, like most lighter color schemes or can I get away with leaving it as is and just doing some lighter grey highlights on the raised areas?

The key to painting black is to not paint it black. Use dark shades of grey to simulate black.

You may need to mix your own or try Vallejo Model Colour 'Black Grey' 70.950.
Then wash with black shade.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Mynids are primarily black. I use eshen grey on the raised surfacesand then share with nuln oil. It works really well.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I usually use Payne's Grey (W&N Galleria paint range but the colour is generic) which is a super dark shade of blue. GW black wash, then highlight with a dark grey.

I painted my Ravenwing Black Knights as follows:

- Black primer
- Repaint with black color (primer tends to have a slightly different tone, so if you want to clean up later you want to repaint it with a brush!)
- drybrush with dark grey
- edgehighlight with a little lighter dark grey
- details

dont shade it, shade on black looks meh.
Thats btw pretty close to the Warhammer TV DV tutorial.

When painting black you really need to find a point where you've added enough grey to highlight but the area still is what you intended-black.

I use a very dark grey, close to the old GW Shadow Grey (almost grey/blue) and drybrush highlight. Then I go back with a black ink. Then I edge everything with a straight grey like codex grey.

Man, these colors Im referencing are really dating me.
