Ok, so I'm trying to get my Skitarii force moving forward.

I don't have to have an HQ per the org chart, but now that we have the Dominus Maniple for the starter box I can work in an Ad Mech Tech-Priest Dominus.

Question is: Can I use the Tech-Priest as the HQ for Ad Mech (and two units of Kataphron Battle Servitors) and then add my Skitarii force as a detachment?

Maybe I'm missing my order of operations, but the Tech Priest and Kataphron would fill my HQ/2 Troops for primary and then the Skitarii come along to fill out the rest of my force.

Is this correct? And do I lose Ad Mech traits since the Tech Priest is technically (no pun intended) part of the Dominus Maniple?

afraid that would be a second detachment so you would ironically need another Dominus for the Kataphrons. You could however take the formation of two kataphron units & kastelans if you didn't want a second dominus - you would however obviously need some kastelans. hope that answers your Q!

second dominus isn't a terrible idea - its pretty good

I bought two of the boxed sets, so I have a 2nd Dominus.

So it would be:

1 dominus and 2 Kataphron for Primary
1 dominus, 1 Vanguard, 1 Ornger for Detachment
All other Skitarii for Detachment

? Is this right and legal?

Depends on the detachments you are planning on using.

For example, a Cult Mechanicus cannot be an HQ for a Skitarii Combined Arms Detachment, nor can the units in the Getting Started Formation fill any slots of a Combined Arms Detachment. (The individual units could, but not also as members of the formation().

However, Formations are detachments in their own right and mostly just answer to themselves and do not require HQ or Troop slots. So you can run those two boxes as two Formation detachments in your army without anything else (depending on points, of course).

So confused...

So am I better off running an Inq HQ and Skitarii army?

Trying to keep things simple, but not having a dedicated HQ for the army and trying to keep it off the unbound making it a bit complicated.

So in my previous list since the Ad Mech is the HQ I can't take Skitarii as individual add on detachments, but I can take the Formations - yes?

So I could run:

1 Dominus and 2 Kataphron for primary
1 Dominus, 1 Ornager, 1 Vanguard unit for Battle Maniple Formation
2 Skitarii Battle Maniples Formation

This would work since I'm using the formations vs. Skitarii Maniple - right?

You do realize that your army doesn't require an HQ as long as the Detachments/Formations which make up your army don't require them.

Yes, and I rather like the Skitarii Warcohort formation and have the models to run it.

But I also have the Ad mech and just was trying to see how they fit into play without running unbound.

Cult Mechanicus should also have their own role Detachment and Formations as well. Review what they have as options and progress from there as for what you want.

There is even a "super" Formation that takes a CM Formation, a Skitarii Formation, and Knight Formation and combines them all as one Detachment.

Is this in the CM book or Knight? I don't see it in the Skitarii one.

CM book, I believe. It references Formations that are in the other two. I could be wrong, I don't have access to those codices right now.

The War Convocation Formation was in WDW #69 (May 23, 2015). Its requirements are 1 Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation Detachment, 1 Skitarii Battle Maniple Formation and 1 Imperial Knight Oathsworn Detachment.

None of the three.

It's composed of...
1. a Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation Detachment
2. a Skitarii Battle Maniple
3. an Imperial Knights Oathsworn Detachment

..and has three special rules, including one which allows you to take all weapon and wargear options for free. You can easily get hundreds and hundreds of points worth of options free doing this.

Don't forget to take a Flesh Tearers Strike Force detachment as allies with a minimum Scout Squad as Troops and Sanguinary Priest as HQ plus six Drop Pods as Fast Attack choices to load your Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus units into for maximum not-much-fun-for-your-opponent brokenness!

I've been playing 40k since RT... I believe that is the common Mantra.

It's not the blood angel days of Rhino Rush in 3rd edition, but it's a start.
