Hi guys, I'm after some feedback on the format for an event I'm thinking of running. I wanted to do something for casual players who enjoy 40k events for the social aspect but are put off by competitive players. I've been trialing this with test games and sending people each other's lists to rate and so far I've had a lot of positive feedback.
Any constructive feedback and ideas very much appreciated!
Herohammer: 40k Friendly Event
The idea:
A fun and casual event for players of all experience and skill to come together and play some epic games of 40k with like minded, chilled out gamers in which insanely badass heroes clash and beat the hell out of each other.
This is NOT a competitive event. Soft scores will be worth more than scores for winning games. This will be detailed below. If you're looking for an event to show up to with the newest filthy netlist and smash everyone you're not going to walk away with the prizes at Herohammer.
Army Composition:
Army composition in Herohammer is done in two parts:
1) The first part of a Herohammer list is a 1000 point army using a single Primary Combined Arms Detachment and up to one optional Allied Detachment. You DO NOT need to take a HQ in the primary Combined Arms detachment, but you may take up to one if you wish to do so. Allied detachments must have a HQ choice as usual.
2) The second part of your Herohammer list is up to 350 points to spend on a single HQ choice OR Lord of War (Super-Heavy vehicles and Gargantuan Monstrous Creatures are NOT allowed) for your Primary Combined Arms Detachment. You do not have to spend the full 350 (some armies won't be able to spend the full amount), but any additional points left over are lost - they do not carry over and you cannot spend them on adding other things to your army.
The 350 points may cover anything in a single HQ slot - it does not have to be a single model.
For example, an Astra Militarum Company Command Squad contains 5 models and gives the option to pay to attach characters and take a dedicated transport. As long as everything chosen fits into one HQ choice on the Combined Arms Detachment and does not cost more than 350 points this is perfectly acceptable. Alternatively the Astra Militarum player may choose to take a Tank Commander in a Leman Russ and take an additional Leman Russ in the tank command squad - this is fine too. Or maybe he wishes to spend his Hero points on Comissar Yarrick - all of these are acceptable.
The idea of Herohammer is not so much to bring a big army to the table, but rather one awesome Hero from the grim darkness of the far future and a small (1000 points) entourage of their choosing.
If the HQ choice you select with your Hero points includes a retinue or command squad such as a Tau Commander and Crisis Suit Bodyguard they form a single unit and may not operate separately. In this example, the Tau Commander may not detach himself from the Crisis Suit Bodyguard and act indepently or join another unit. If the all of the unit is killed apart from the independent character, they may then function like a normal independent character.
Army list restrictions:
1) No Super-Heavy Vehicles or Gargantuan Monstrous Creatures
2) No foritfications
3) No Forgeworld units may be taken
4) The psychic power Invisibility is banned - if you roll this on the telepathy table re-roll. If youo get it again, re-roll until you get something else. If a model comes knowing this power automatically (like Be'lakor) they may not use it.
Scoring:
Each game is worth a maximum of 31 tournament points:
Win = 10 points
Draw = 5 points
Loss = 0 points
Slay the Warlord = 1 point
Friendly = 0 - 10
Fluffy = 0 - 10
Friendly and Fluffy scores:
Before the start of each game you and your opponent exchange army lists. You then score each other's list our of 10 for both Fluffiness and Friendliness. This is written down and you are not obliged to show the score to your opponent, just place it in the box on the judges' table.
The scores your opponent gives you for your list are added to your score for the game when determining your overall tournament points for the round.
Example 1:
Player A Draws Game 1, and in that game he gets Slay the Warlord for killing his opponent's commander - 6 points.
His opponent rated his army list 8/10 for Fluffy and 6/10 for Friendly, giving him an additional 14 points.
So for Round 1 of the tournament Player A gets 20 points - 6 points for his in-game score, and 14 points for his soft scores.
Example 2:
Player B Wins Game 1, and in that game he gets Slay the Warlord for a total of 11 points.
His opponent rated his list 6/10 for Fluffy and 2/10 for Friendly.
So for Round 1 Player B gets 19 points total - 11 points for his in-game score but only 8 for his soft scores - he actually gets LESS points than Player A who got a Draw in this round!
Example 3:
Player C wins Game 1 but does not get Slay the Warlord for a total of 10 points.
His opponent rates his list 10/10 for Fluffy and 8/10 for Friendly.
Player C gets 28 point total - higher than either Player A or Player B because not only did he win his game, he did it with a Fluffy and Friendly army list written in the spirit of the event.
* Discrepancies: should a player be found to be giving every opponent he plays low scores intentionally (eg by other players giving his opponents higher scores for the same list) this will be investigated and the judges will make a ruling before final scores are decided.
Missions:
TBC - likely tweaked versions of the Blog Wars missions if Alex allows it.
Practice Mission:
One objective in the center of the board worth 10 points to either player.
You then place one objective in your own deployment zone which is worth 5 points to YOU, but 15 points to YOUR OPPONENT.
Your opponent also places an objective in his deployment zone which is worth 15 points to YOU and 5 points to YOUR OPPONENT.
FEEDBACK POINTS (so far):
Allies - BB only?
Str D - nerf to S10 AP2?
Invis - nerf rather than remove?
Rough guide to what constitutes 'fluffy' and 'friendly' in rulebook?

So that's what I have so far. As an example, I asked a competitive Tau player to write me a list with this format and got this (which he typed over messenger so forgive the formatting):
1 commander multiple spectrum scanner pure tide engram just Web jammer and command and control node 3 body guard 2 with plasma guns and eow 1 with 2 fusion and target lock 1 gun drone because I had the spare 12 points 350 hq
5 fire warriors 45
10 kroot 1 hound 65
5 marker drones 70
4 pathfinders 44
1 unit of 3 broadsides 3 missile drones eow bonding knife 249
1 crisis 2 fusion counter defence 57
2 ion riptides 2 shielded missile drones 1 plasma with t lock and eow one sms with stems and t lock 470
I asked a casual player (the two have never met) to rate it and he gave it 6/10 for Fluff and 2/10 for Friendly. So even if the Tau player smashes his opponent with this list he can only get a maximum of 19 points this round, whereas someone who brings a fluffier and friendlier list would have the potential for a much higher score for the round.
So, if you made it this far, anyone got any feedback? =D
