Hey guys, I really want to get into 40k, and have had a few small matches using other friend's aries but would like to have my own.
It doesn't need to be really competitive, I don't think I'll be doing many if any tournaments.

I really like the look and lore of the Skitarii, but have heard that they aren't the best at being a solo army.
So, I can have other forces in the army as well. But not Astra Militarum or Tau, if possible.

Thanks in advance, and to be honest, if you think Skitarii completely suck, just give me an army list that's decent

The big War Convocation is by far the most competitive way to play Skitarii. It includes a Skitarii Battle Maniple formation from the Skitarii codex. The great part is that while you're buying, building, and painting a Battle Maniple, you're also getting a wide variety of models for smaller fun lists.

So basically buy one of every Skitarii kit. You might go in this order:
* Two boxes of Vanguard, build with all upgrades (make one a five-man ranger squad for War Convocation)
* One or two Sydonian Dragoon with taser lance, add phosphor serpenta
* One box of Infiltrators with tasers
* One or two Onager Dunecrawlers, try to build with magnets to swap between Icarus and Neutron Laser
* One box of Rusttalkers with claws and razors
* An Imperial Knight Crusader with gunz
* Some Cult Mechanicus to complete the War Convocation

As you're collecting, play games with these units in a Skitarii Maniple detachment to learn how they work and don't work. These units are strong but not over-powered outside of the War Convocation.

Skitarii is basically only half of the 'Adeptus Mechanicus' faction. You will probobly want to get the Cult Mechanicus book too.

There is a new starter box that gives you a Tech Priest Dominus and some skitarii units and a formation to field them together.

And at a price discount!

Totally agree here. I just got into AdMech myself and found the two codices combined make an awesome list through the War Convocation (it did go undefeated at last year's BAO). The Start Collecting bundle can save you huge. I've bought two and sold the second Techpriest Dominus, then reinvested the money on that sale into more rangers/vanguard. Good luck...
