I am starting a new army and and I have narrowed it down to be either eldar or necrons. What are the tactical benefits of each?

Thanks,
Xofox

What would you say your play style and modelling and painting preferences are? Imo power of a codex is fairly low on the list.

Eh, I wouldn't say slightly better. It depends on your play style. Eldar have more abundance of cheddar, and can easily abuse it. They have mobility and tons of firepower and can handle literally anything they face against. Necrons are literally the hardest army to kill. They have good saves/invulns on top of having 5+/4+ FNP even-against-instant-death saves on pretty much everything. They also have decent firepower and some good CC options as well.

Just depends on how you wanna play.

Not really. Choose whichever faction's fluff you like the most, though (orks).

Thanks, do the Eldar have the capability of close combat? are they at all good at it? or do they have to stay long range? That will decide it for me I think.

Striking Scorpions are decent at anti-infantry, but otherwise, most of their CC options aren't viable compared to other armies. The only real CC they do is the Wraithknight, and that's just because Stomp is broken.

Also eldar have psykers, which necrons lack. The psychic phase is amazing when your opponent has no psychic defense.

May also interest you to note,
Both Edlar and Necrons are considered top tier, but when they fight each other it's pretty much a tie (very killy vs hard to kill).

I can only give my experience of Eldar, but they have amazing shooting capabilities (their most basic weapons ignore armour on a 6 to wound and staggering amounts of Strength 6 and 8). Amazing speed and mobility and some really fun mechanics such as battlefocus, skyleap and flickerjump. Also they have soo much psykic potential it’s hilarious.

Close combat wise they are not known to be too impressive however I do like to throw a seer council into close combat (psykic buffs, every weapon has armourbane and flesh bane). Wraith Guard (toughness 6 BTW) can be armed with high strength AP2 axes and shields for invuls saves. Wraithknights do rock in close combat with stomp, but his giant D strength sword helps .

Shining Spears offer strength 6/8 AP3/2 attacks when charging, fairly expensive but when paired up with Hemlock wraithfighters for -2 moral shenanigans pretty much sweep anything non space marine.

Striking Scorpion Exarchs can swing strength 6 powerfists at initiative
And howling banshees…provide moral support?
Either way I space elves, choose who you like the fluff and aesthetic of
