Hey all,

So I'm returning to 40K after about a 10 year break. turns out alot seems to have changed, but alot has stayed the same too which is comforting

When I started I ended up with a pretty basic space marine force, poorly painted and nothing I was really all to fond of (I was 14 when I started first time, give me a break) so this time I really wanted to read the fluff and pre plan out purchases and what shape the force would eventually take. I've done a lot of reading on the new codex which led me to really liking the raven guard fluff, also looking through forge world stuff I found the Raptor tactics which I really liked too, so whatever I end up with I want to kind off fall into line with these armies but I'll be painting them as a unique chapter (Colors I've been running with are Dark green, silver and purple).

The store that I've started buying from is running newbie games and I figured I'd build a small 500pts list to go in and try out before getting too committed to anything, the below is what I've pulled together so far. Keen to hear any feedback or major mistakes, I know 500pts is extremely limiting but figured I'd have to start somewhere:

Chapter name "Unkown, Open to Ideas" - 500pts

Captain - 120pts
Primarch's Wrath, Power Weapon

Dreadnought - 125pts
T/L Lascannon, Missile Launcher

Tactical Squad, 5 man - 85pts
Plasma Gun

Tactical Squad, 5 man - 85pts
Melta Gun, Melta Bombs

Scout Squad, 5 man - 84pts
Snipers, Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks

Tactics: Dreadnought and Scouts form a rear fire base made up of all heavy weapons, Captain joins the Tac team with the plasma gun and is used to hold objectives, Other Tac team is also used for objectives/ suiciding at enemy armor if required/bogging down advancing enemy troops.

If you're using Raptor tactics, I would strongly suggest taking Lias Issadon as your HQ. He is a Beast at long range.

Yeah. I've looked at him for lists over 1000pts. For the core of the army I've been wanting to do a demi company with him as the captain. The tac team configuration is driving me insane though. I'm tempted to only take a special weapon (melta?), max out on bolters to take advantage of the legendary marksman perk. Plus master of ambush eliminates the need for transports kinda...

Good tactics, good list. Looking like a solid start. I'm going to put my vote in for rhinos/razorbacks, for that suicide/objective grabbing melta tac squad, as it'll keep 'em alive for a lot longer, and still allow you to shoot melta through a fire port.

The armies that I collect:

- Tyranids, 2,000 pts.
- Orks, 1,250 pts.
- Tau, 750 pts.
- Guard (PDF), 750 pts.

(Yes I have a thing for horde armies to some extent)

The 1000pts Draft as follows (breaking the subject line I guess :S)
It can be made from the out of the box demi company set too...

Lias - 175pts

Dreadnought - 125pts
T/L Las, Missile Launcher

1st Tac Team (5 man) - 85pts
Plasma Gun

2nd Tac Team (10 man) - 165pts
Meltagun, Heavy Bolter, Meltabombs

3nd Tac Team (10 man) - 165pts
Meltagun, Heavy Bolter, Meltabombs

Assault Squad (5 man) - 85pts
Packs only

Devastators (10 man) - 200pts
4x Missile Launchers

Tactics slightly similar, Dread and Devs form a rear firebase, Lias joins first tac team, all tac squads are given infiltrate from his 'Master of Ambush' perk (reason why no transports are in the list), Tacs hold objectives/kill things, Assault squad drops in to run interference when required, Lias locator beacon may help in them not face plant into terrain...

The Tac team config is bothering me though

Assault Weapons:
My experience with flamers has been poor, everywhere I've played, marines or CSM have been the meta, so they've been ineffective. Plasma I haven't had much experience with and I've read alot about people rejecting them on the it gets hot basis. Melta seems short range but a solid hit, grav seems also tempting, If the whole squad sits still, which raptor tactics kinda wants them to do, gravgun + HB, means they can have 14 shots per turn so this seems like a good config? So I'm torn between melta/grav currently.

Heavy Weapons:
If I'm understanding snap fire enough, moving heavy's shoot at BS1, I'll keep the tacs as static as possible but they'll likely have to shuffle for objectives occasionally after infiltrating, so heavybolter rolling 3 dice seems better in this instance then everything else rolling 1. Also tempted to leave heavies out of the tac teams all together for the extra bolter to take advantage of their CT's.

Sergeants:
Everyone I've ever upgrade did sweet bugger all, so as far as I'm concerned he gets a standard bolter, and if he's lucky, a special coloured helmet! I can't justify 10pts for a combi weapon either, particularly if the other heavy's in the squad also cost the same...
