I know it's not as good of a value as some of the other boxes, but I've always had this nagging interest in Necrons. Are the models and formation that come in the box a decent start to a Necron Army?

Thanks in advance

The way I always look at these kind of boxes is I look at what you get "for free". Looking at the necron box you basically get a "free" overlord if you buy a warrior box and a triarch stalker so if you were considering to get those eventually anyway I'd consider it a good deal.

Maybe. We've been going over how to make use of the Formation rules in the Necron Tactica. We've got some solid ideas in there it seems.

Necron warriors are useful, necron lords are useful, stalkers are not bad, scarabs can be shoved somewhere.

Overall, not a bad deal at all. the no longer existing battleforce was better in my mind, but this is still good.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

All these Star Collecting! boxes are solid deals. It definitely looks like a good starter for an army. If you can get it for 20% off from the Warstore it's even better!

If you like robots and spider tanks though, I would highly recommend the Skitarii one over the Necron one. The dunecrawler looks better than the Stalker imo and the Dominus looks a hell of a lot more badass than the "WATCH THE WATERMELOAN" Necron Overlord. Plus it's a better deal as well.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

With this kind of thinking, just quit. You are already in the wrong mind set. By that I mean, you are comparing "value" to other boxes. Put it this way. You want watermelons. You love eating watermelons. Watermelons are $20. Now you have Oranges. You hate oranges. They are $10. You keep buying watermelons because you like them. Why are you not buying oranges? Because you hate oranges and have no "value" to you. So it's not WORTH it to you even though you would be paying 50% less.

Want to talk about "value" as some other boxes, then why are you not buying Warmahordes? It is so much more of a better "value". Thing is, you want to play Necrons, so how is Warmahordes who have a better value will not be worth it to you though.

What I am trying to say is don't think of "value" from buying this or that, but what is WORTH to YOU.

You want Necrons, then get Necrons. Why buy something else because it's cheaper or has a better value? It will not be WORTH it to you no matter how much money you are saving. So I say get Necrons because that is what is interesting to you.

If you are ever worried about PRICE and what is WORTH or VALUE 40K is not for you then. You want to play Necrons, then I think the the Necron starter set is a good start. It's not a finished start, you will need to buy more expensive plastic toy soldiers, but it's a good start.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Personally, I'd stay searching for the old Battleforce. It's closer to a Reclamation Legion right there and since I personally am (still...) building towards a Decurion, that was Priority #1. The Stalker is easy to buy separate, and Lords of many flavors are cheap as hell if you look for used. And since personally I would rather have a Catacomb Command Barge, the walking Overlord is a pretty low priority.

It helps if you know what you're building toward. Have a game plan and execute it. The Get Started box is a 'full' army since you can use the included Formation, so if that's what you want, there ya go. Count up the points and ask yourself if that's good to go and if you'll be happy starting from that point instead of the Battleforce route.

"Value" is a relative term and often misused. Davor pretty much hit it on the nose. Other sets may be a better "deal" but if they aren't what you are looking for, they aren't worth the money. If you are looking to buy an iPad, you wouldn't buy a Surface Pro just because it's cheaper. Have you planned out an army list? Look at what you're getting in the box. Does it include everything in this box? If not, is there another bundle (you can still find the old Battleforce on eBay, Amazon, and if you're lucky, at your FLGS) offer more of what you are looking for? If you plan to use the new formation, then this is a great deal! If you are planning on fielding a Decurion with a Judicator Battalion, you are well on your way. If you don't plan on using the Stalker, then that will be just a display model. Same with if you plan to use a CCB or Zandrekh. The Overlord will just by on display. Not that either of these models wouldn't look good on the shelf, and you may decide that you want to use them somewhere down the road.

tl:dr Does the box contain what you want to play? If so, it is a good deal. If not, look for another deal.

Well OP, I have been playing Necron over 10 years. That box should be purchased no matter what your building towards. I would HEAVILY ENCOURAGE a Catacombe Comand Barge and even some wraiths.

Necron Warriors. I field about 50 and feel it's still not enough lol.

I personally am a HUGE fan of Destroyer Cults. I use it all the time in my lists.

That box OP, even though says starter box, isnt enough for a starting army. Buy the codex OP, research the army. Figure out your over all goal, buy to harness that idea.

I think as a starter set it's fine; a walker with a superb weapon and buff, a very strong troop choice, the most powerful non-named character any army can throw into the ring when kitted out, and an incredible, almost game-breaking special rule for trolling enemies with immortal squads. An ideal way to start. Maybe it just suits my game style.

Triach stalker group + destroyer cult = win, autowin sometimes. Especially vs marines.
