where neither party had a shooting phase (or shooting esque attack). so it would be a punching only match, you can buy all the guns and grenades you want but you cant use them

At small points, sure. 1250pt games max. Some of my armies would be happier about it than others, but yeah. I wouldn't have an issue for a 'fun day' type deal like that.

As a Tau player, screw you.

But as someone who is curious as to how naked suits would do in CC, I probably wouldn't mind if I knew about it beforehand, and had permission to buy sig systems for each detachment.

Tzeentch Veteran Marine with Psychic Potential

I proposed this to my group, and everyone thought it was an awesome idea to field some units/combinations that have collected way too much dust because they're great at cc but fold to shooting.

I'd love to play this, with the caveat that shooting causing effects in assault can still happen (blind grenades, assault grenades that need to hit to work, psychic powers that buff a cc unit or debuff an opponents). I would also allow marines to fire bolt pistols before charging because in my mind they use their pistols to soften a Frontline before a charge.

I think it would make for a fun, different kind of 40k match that could be nostalgic and interesting. As long as both players agree beforehand to any restrictions or considerations.

Who uses sticks? Claws and talons work better.

But to be serious, that's usually how it works unless the beat stick gets drowned in bodies and dies.

No, as that would basically just be rolling dice to win. Shooting requires positioning to both gain and deny sight, while assaulting despite shooting requires a ton of skill too. Simply charging in doesn't, unless you have flanking and more which fantasy used for a while.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

You'd still have to deal with rock/paper/scissors and knowing which unit will be best at killing what. Also, some units need the charge to be effective and thus positioning and screening would be needed. There's no less tactics involved than a standard game, it's just a different set of tactics. Many screening and tackling tactics are removed when shooting is involved.

This is why all me guardsmen have bayonets of close combat weapons. There is no more glorious a death than while driving imperial steel into the black hearts of xenos and heretics.

sure, I'd play this.

You'd be facing an army of Repentia and Penitent Engines though, and would probably come to regret your decision.

Wait, you mean there are options other than CC? I always thought sluggas were just weird shaped clubs.

But yes, I would do this in a heartbeat. Not sure many others at my regular place would, though. Space Wolves are about the heaviest melee list there (other than mine) and I reliably munch them up in CC.

Well...in essence you're also getting rid of a lot of the psychic phase as well as the shooting phase and there would be quite a few shenanigans going on with flyers/FMC so I probably wouldn't be much of a fan of it even with Harlequins...

And being a jerk with 5 wraithknights becomes even more jerk like...

...and Daemons with constant summoning would be even more horrific with no ranged counters
