This is kind of an odd one.

I had a unit of tankbustas charge into a group of castellan robots joined by some kind of admech techpriesty type guy. I'm not too familiar with ad mech. Normally, ICs can't join units of MCs, but I believe that admech has some rule that gets around this.

Side note - what exactly can join units of castellan robots, and how are they allowed to do so? Like I said, ICs can't join units of MCs, but I've seen that happen enough with admech that I think it's allowed.

Anyways. Tankbustas have melta bombs, castellan robots are MCs. Normal combat stuff (even passed fear tests!). Question becomes - when there are no more robots, but there are remaining unallocated melta bomb wounds, can they be allocated to the techpriest guy? He is part of the MC unit, and I can use melta bombs against units of MCs.........but I do feel as if melta bombs shouldn't be able to be used on him. Then again, he's kind of breaking the base rules of the game by being in the unit of MCs in the first place, so maybe he's fair game for melta bomb hits?

In the end, I had a warboss involved with the combat, so his PK made it a moot point (I had him take melta bomb hits first, excess melta wounds were discarded after robots were all dead, PK killed the techpriest). But I'm just curious what would have happened had the warboss not been there.

So, excess melta bombs wounds spilling through castellans and onto their IC? Yea or nay?

He's not an IC, he's just a character attached to the unit.

If there were MCs in the unit when Melta Bombs were used, then any extra wounds would flow over to the Character. Once all the MCs are dead, You cannot use the Melta Bombs against the Character.

MELTA BOMBS
...
Assault
-Unless used in assaults against vehicles, gun emplacements, or Monstrous Creatures, melta bombs have no effect

*emphasis mine

Seems pretty clear-cut to me (at first).
Then again, you were in assault with MCs. If they were vehicles (walkers), then I would say absolutely no way they carry over b/c rolling armor penetration =/= rolling to wound. However, since you did roll to wound and caused more wounds than the MCs initially had, I guess they should carry over.
Goofy either way, but I would RP this as the character's creations exploding and falling on top of him. Plus a whole mess'o destruction-crazed boyz ain't gonna care who gets a little collateral damage.

Yeah, I agree. Technically, I am in assault with MCs, and am legally allocating melta bomb wounds to the castellan unit. I'm not sure what rule would put a big stop sign in front of the excess melta bomb wounds.

But it does seem odd to hit an infantry character with a melta bomb, which is otherwise disallowed.

Personally, I like to go with fair & reasonable rules when it's ambiguous, and I'd personally feel that it would not be fair and reasonable to be able to hit an infantry character with melta bombs in any circumstance. But I'm not sure if that's RAW.
