Sorry for the low quality photo. What do all think I still need to do the base, I'm planning on a rocky cracked dessert setting.

Is that the final colour of your base? It's asking for yellow to me

The desert bases sound like a good choice.
I'd also be tempted to do something with their guns - perhaps white, or the same red as the bits on the shoulder pad, so that they can stand out a bit more from the model. I tend to like guns that stand out so its nice and obvious which direction the figure is facing, but that's just personal taste.
Otherwise, looks good

Thanks, I'm not to worried about model facing; while it is a good idea; the having the gun be the same colors make its fit in better.

I've found that Tau miniatures don't take to metallic paints very well. To me, their curvy panels and armor look their best in matt, although your tastes may vary.
You could go with a medium grey and sharp near-white highlights to get a similar look to what you have now, minus the shine.

@Youid I can see your point of the smooth panels, I haven't had a chance to try this on the Piranha's I have but I'm currently satisfied

Here is the Inspiration I had for this army its the second skin (Tash-Murkon).

the stock army colors for Tau never did suit my fancy
