I'm thinking I'm going to give AoS a serious try.

When it first released I thought it was neat but just haven't gotten around to starting anything because I was trying to focus on just 40k. But I'm seeing it get a lot of play at my local GW and it would be nice to participate.

I should be cool with just the PDF rules and PDF unit info on the GW website if I wanted to do maybe an Ogre Kingdoms or Orc and Goblins army right?

Yep, the free rules are all you need :-)

Everything else is optional.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

That's all you need to get started.

I believe Orruuuuks have a "Start Collecting".

With AoS you can buy what looks cool and go from there.

Oh, and always play scenarios. Plenty of fun.

Cool beans!

I printed out the PDF for the rules plus for the O&G and OK units to put in a binder to have them handy.

Ogres especially get you a powerful war band fast with few models. Every one of them is nasty.

If it matters to you, I suggest going for round bases as well. I think it looks a lot better and helps the more fluid play style of the game. Not a requirement though. Ogres would be 40mm rounds for the base guys, Orcs 32mm, goblins 25mm.

Okay cool good to know. Yeah I plan on round bases for this go around. I think that's one thing that kept me from getting anything started: the whole square vs. round and what I should use or how I was to go about it.

At first I was thinking I'd stick to square because I know a buddy of mine still likes to play older editions (I like to as well), but it seems round is more suited for AoS... at least to me it seems that way.

GW put out a nice AoS app for Android/iPhone. I'd recommend downloading it, it's fun to look over stats and formations while you're at work pretending to be busy. I can't speak to its usefulness in an actual game, but it seems like it would be a fast and handy tool that lets you save/organize war scrolls in a little "my battle" section of the app.

I'll get it for my iPad. I'm trying to keep my phone distractions to a minimum haha.

Always good to have another person into the game! I will add this. The app is prolly one of the best peripherals GW has created in years. You can absolutely use it in games especially once you played with your army a few times and know the basics.

Its very handy to create and an "army book" with only the units you are using as well as the scenario you are playing.

Don't buy anything yet. Just use your 40K minis or what you have and play with them first. Get a feel of Age of Sigmar and then go on from there if you like the rules, then you will know what play style to go with.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Good idea... I could always ask my buddy or even the store to borrow some models to try the game.

'Murica! (again)

Echo the above. Always always do a scenario. A big difference from old Warhammer is a bit of a leveling of the playing field in that lesser units have to hit and wound rolls which can be adjusted by size and other factors. So goblins don't necessarily need 6 or even 5 to wound a dragon but there's a lot of synergy which keeps it interesting. Terrain is very important but the focus is on the story more than grind/smash in the middle. That just means for now bring what you like and enjoy. And find opponents that want to do the same.

From my experience just about all players I know have come to like the look of round bases but do what's best. I'll rebase eventually but we still play fine with square bases. You don't need to buy anything at first so experiment it's units, proxy, try diff terrain and its risk free. Hope you enjoy.

yeah the bases literally are meaningless. but I think the round does look better in an "open formation"
