I'm just starting to build a pure coven army but as I've never seen them before I'm wondering what sort of power level they are at? If I've phrased that poorly sorry I'm just trying to get a gauge on where they fall. I like playing challenging armies

Haemonculus Covens have some really groovy formations, the most notable ones being the CorpseThief Claw and the Scalpel Squadron. The first one is essentially a mini death-star that generates a tonne of victory points against infantry armies and is generally just a pain to deal with, the latter enables you to null deploy (very powerful tactic) and provides a decent alpha strike. Grotesques are really nasty assault units, but just how good the army as a whole is will depend on whether you want Allies or not. Seeing as you want to do a pure list, you will have some vulnerabilities such as anti-air.

Thanks for the response! No I like the idea of playing a pure coven list, even though it will inevitably result in a more difficult to play/worse army

I've found that flyer-spam outside of Tyranids and Chaos Daemons is mostly going the way of the dodo so anti-air shouldn't be too much of a worry for you, especially as your army is tough enough to just play to the objectives and ignore them in most cases. I'm not an expert on Haemonculus Covens by any stretch so I could just be farting in the wind here but what I raised above seems to be the general feeling surrounding the army. As far as thematic armies go they seem to do pretty well for themselves despite all the restrictions, the changes to Power From Pain are great as your whole army will be Fearless from turn two onwards!

Yea it's a really nice boost, some of the warlord trait's such as re-rolling FnP for pain engines within 12" is very very good
