So I've been thinking about getting into frostgrave, but have a few questions i was hoping the fine folks here might address

1) How feasible is a "combat mage" - I get that the entire game is centered around a mage casting spells, but I've never been one who really enjoyed that. I like the idea of a wizard who can fight (or even fight first, magic second) - is this a feasible thing in this game?

2)Assuming the first is at all feasible, which of the wizard types is best suited for it? Enchanter?

No, you'll never get a Wizard that's great at fighting.

What you can do, however, is pick up the new Sellsword expansion which has the rules for hiring Captains for your Warband. They can substitute for your wizard, hold more equipment, and perform "tricks of the trade" for combat bonuses.

The problem with a combat mage is, I think, a matter of armor, which as far as I remember is limited to the use of magic ring +1and may be a shield, which lead to a decent armor finally, so your mage can have a fighting skill of +5/+6 , armor 11 with hand weapon and dagguer, or for instance armor +2, f +5 with hand weapon and shield.

We have only played a few games but combat is risky - even for those with reasonable stats - you roll very low and they roll very high and you can die very quickly and once your wizards down you are majorily handicaped.

Bizarely my two best fighters so far have been two Thiefs with daggers - killed all sorts fo stuff - just by rolling well

Best game I ever had was when my Warhound tied up the other players Barbarian for two turns, and then killed him!

Apparently the digital Sellsword expansion is "out of stock"?

Looking at the preview pages - that Captain is very cheap!

I think that's just a temporary problem with the Osprey site. They were apparently switching warehouse this week which has caused some issues. Apparently even with the ebooks!

You can get it at Wargames Vault and on Amazon though.

Hand to hand combat is dangerous for your Wizard for the reasons already mentioned - you can lose a lot of health in one or two hits. I just started over at level 1, first game was the scenario where you have to fight the living pillars to get treasure. I rolled badly and my Wizard lost half her health to an angry piece of scenery with a Fight score of +0...! Imagine if that'd been a Knight or Barbarian.

However...I still think it's a good idea to put some points into your Fight stat, as this is used to dodge shooting attacks. Missile weapons in this game are very dangerous and even with the most careful positioning you're going to have to duck an arrow now and then.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Great game.

For those of you that have a small place to play and happen to play Heroclix, there are a number of Heroclix maps that work well with Frostgrave. The map size is 2 foot wide and 3 foot long. It has 1x1 inch squares over the entire map and printed scenery. It is just a nice, easy way to play quick games.

Hey guys I'm trying to find the Frost Giant mini pictured in the frostgrave rulebook bestiary section. (p119) I haven't been able to track one down. Any Ideas?

I haven't played much yet, but the stats for a wizard aren't as terrible as in some games, but the lack of armour is a bit of a deal breaker as someone mentioned above...

Hello!

So, I went and did some hunting for you and came up with these two:

First Which is done by NorthStar Games and can be found on their website Here

and this one

Second Which is done by Copplestone Castings and can be found on their website under ''FM18 Magog the Hill Giant'' Here

Hopefully to help in future, if you look in the front of game books (like the Frostgrave book) before the table of contents, they often give a list of Acknowledgements that most people ignore as 'boring legal stuff'. They state all the manufacturers they use and kits there

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)

Awesome, Thanks for the help Wulfmar, that Hill giant is exactly what I was looking for. Dammit, should have thought to check the small print!

BTW a combat mage is easy to make and quite deadly.

A: Take buff spells such as possession and Strength
B: Give Wiz Hand weapon and dagger combo
C: Get magic +2 Fight Hand weapon Asap
D: Gloves of strength for +2 Damage
E: Fatestone for that emergency reroll
F: Keep one or two minions with the wizard to help with gang up bonuses

You can easily push +9 fight(+13 or more with gang up bonuses) that's enough to wipe almost anything HTH and it only gets better with XP.

Max bonus with 2 allies is +5 Fight base, +1 Dagger, +2 Magic sword, +6 spells(Strength&Possession&Combat meditation), +2 Potion, +4 allies = +20 fight that's enough to auto kill most things with an average roll.

Enchanter can get Strength and TK (one good buff and the other gets the opponent to come to you by moving the treasure toward you.)
Summoner has Possession and Leap both again very good.

Really it just depends as you get 8 spells to start with 3 from your primary school 3 from allied schools(one from each) and 2 others from 2 separate neutral schools. So you can build for almost any purpose. (Side note xp wise a fighting mage will rise quickly as there is major xp in wizards killing opponent models)

Putting all that effort and magic items into a CC wizard doesn't seem worth it when he'll get Elemental Bolted by the enemy Wizard/Apprentice the second he shows his face.
