So I finally have a terrain board, with some hills and assorted terrain, but i'm lacking multi level buildings and LoS blocking stuff. What;s good for both detail but won't break the bank and is ideally US based?

You can get terrain almost anywhere. I have a few pieces I picked up from the Friendly Local Hobby Shop, stuff like a ceramic church and I even sawed a small wooden birdhouse in two. I used a dome shaped piece of foam with some toothpicks for a chaos bunker. And I even have a two story stone ruin I got from a pet shop (in the aquarium section). also if you can get your hands on a hot wire cutter, foam insulation is great for carving up into shapes. I've gotten trees and water features from model railroad places, and some of them have buildings too. It's all about creativity and the theme of your battlefield, and gluing extra bits/parts from 40k kits on things doesn't hurt either.

Frontline gaming makes a two types of buildings now, that are designed to be LoS blocking and more. They have an L-shaped building, and shipping crates. They're all rather stackable and nice.
The ITC is just the gift that keeps on giving, linky link: https://www.frontlinegaming.org/itc-terrain-series/
You can see the base floor has a lack of windows, good LoS blocking.

How sturdy are they? They're one of the few I've actually looked at.

Well I haven't used them myself, so I can't really say, but they're made to stack and then nest for storage, along with constant tournament use, so I'd assume they're designed to be sturdy enough to withstand most things.
I'd say ask Reece as he's on here a lot, but the LVO is happening this weekend and he probably will have his hands full with that. That being said, they'll probably be using a lot of that terrain during the event, which will be a good functional test. More so, I'm guessing if it isn't sturdy, or there's some defect, they'll make it right as it's their own product.
Edit: They're also releasing a full stack-able building that can be made into sky scrapes if you want. The only issue is their buildings are all boxy, but I guess that's a cost and functionality thing. A mix of the L shapes and full stacked building would be pretty cool, the L shapes can be open to move into, while the stacked ones could be just LoS blockers you can't really move into.

Miniature Market has Mantic's brick ruins on clearance.
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/catalog/product/view/id/47071/s/mgtrb03/
$20
Personally I'm a huge fan of Pegasus' gothic buildings. Their ruined building will give you 2 corners each with a second floor for $20. They cover about a 2 or 3 square feet.

The ruin kits are not as flexible as the Gothic buildings which I just love
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-518-890_Happy%20Acres.html
but are cheap, big, good and paint up fast.

Fish tank ornaments include a variety of ruined buildings.
They usually are ancient/fantasy rather than modern/SF/gothic, but they are quite cheap and come ready painted so if you want to get cracking quickly they would be a good choice.

Very, other than the parts that fill in the doorways and windows (very thin cardboard, effectively). I've had no issues even standing my Stormsurge on top of them. The upper level slots in to the lower one and does not move about at all. I'd have no concerns about these other than perhaps transporting them.
If you're building them, I'd suggest wood glue rather than superglue though

Very nice plastic casts, completely modular etc. really nice for 40k. You have different option types e.g. ruins, habitat, etc
I think, but not 100% sure, that adepticon use or will use this.
Ah yes, here:

You can also make you own Multilevel ruins out of cardboard pretty easy.
I made a bunch of them last year because a store my friend opened wanted to get into 40k, but needed terrain. So we used his extra boxes that his inventory came in.

I miss when people needed to find some nice space corridors. Litko does buildings too, but it's just not the same.

Best place to get ruined model buildings is to go to a university and find the architecture class. Bring a hammer.

Fafnir wrote:Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |
