This is my first AoS army. I don't know who/what I'll be facing, so looking more for "well rounded", rather than "purpose built" at this point.

What I have:

Slaves to Darkness Start Collecting, so:
- 1 Sorcerer Lord (Chaos Runestaff)
- 1 Chaos Chariot (Chaos Greatblade, though War-Flail isn't off the table)
- 5 Chaos Knights (Chaos Glaive)
- 12 Chaos Warriors (single weapon + rune shield)

What I'm thinking of adding:

- 20 Khorne Bloodreavers. Figure they're great for tying up big nasties for a couple of turns, and maybe even stripping a wound or two from said big nasty.
- 10 Blood Warriors
- 1 Exalted Deathbringer. This would be my General.
- ? Skull Canon(s) It would be nice to have some ranged attack.

This is by no means set in stone. I'd be willing to add Demons as well. Chariot, Knights and Warriors will all take Khorne keyword. This is just what I'd like for a starter army, with other expansions down the road. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Grab the Khorne starter box as well. Only $100 and would fill out your army.

I don't see a Khorne starter listed on the web site. I see an expansion set for $200(USD)?

ETA: Check that, you were talking Demons. That's certainly an option for down the road.

Bloodreavers are quite weak and won't be able to tie much up without being buffed by the Bloodsecrator. The chaos warriors, knights and blood warriors would all be better at tying up big monsters.

The daemon start collecting box does seem up your alley. Bloodletters are better than the reavers and Bloodcrushers have some survivability, plus you can make a herald of Khorne on foot and a skull cannon from the blood throne kit.

I'd say from your list what you're missing is one big hammer piece/monster of your own.

I was looking at the Exalted Deathbringer as my big hammer guy. If there are better suggestions, I'm all ears.

I like him for sure but as just a foot hero, he's not quite on the level of say a Bloodthirster. I'm thinking a bigger unit such as the 'thirster with the ability to deal out a lot of damage and also become a focal point from your opponent would round out the list. A Chaos Lord on Manticore is another idea. One idea I like, though he's not that powerful really, is adding a Cygor to a Khorne army - gives you a shooting attack plus dispel ability.

I might suggest picking up a Bloodsecrator on eBay. They can be had pretty cheap. It's from the AoS starter and doesn't sell individually. If you're going the all-Khorne theme, his banner gives all Khorne units within 18 inches +1 attack and immunity to battleshock. Bloodreavers get 3 attacks each when his banner is planted, as they also have a rule about adding an attack when near Chaos totems.

A Bloodsecrator would be a good buy if you find one. I'd also go for a Warshrine and Juggerlord for their buffs.

The latest Garagehammer podcast inspired me to add an idea: Wrathmongers. They have an ability that if they die, you choose an enemy unit to attack itself or its friends, which can be quite powerful. Run those guys around monsters/big characters and they might end up killing themselves for you.

As has already been said, if you plan on having some Khorne units, get a Bloodsecrator to go with them.

I ordered one off of ebay. Should be here in a few days.

Hello!

Here is my piece:

Forget about the Blood Reavers, they're really not good.
Consider beefing up either the Chaos Knights or the Chaos Warriors with an extra box.
You definitely need a hard hitting Hero. If you wanna stay with Slaves to Darkness, consider a Lord of Chaos or Chaos Lord mounted (horse or manticore). If you want Khorne stuff, there's a lot of choice, I personally like Valkia the Bloody a lot.
And then if you go Khorne, yes, Wrathmongers are awesome! (and a great box to have lots of spare parts). You can then look at Skarr or a Skullgrinder to go with them as a theme.

My thoughts: The entire Khorne Bloodbound line is full of good troops.

If you are using a points system (wounds or something else), what is good will differ if you are using various competitive rules, some competitive rules will over price and underprice various units.

That being said, my comments:

The Exalted Death Dealer is a great figure. He also makes a great #2 hero. He is not as good when he is your general.

For a Khorne general, the Aspiring Death Dealer has the best command ability. The Khorne Lord on a Juggernaut has the second best command ability.

Other heroes that are really good.

The basic Chaos Lord could become a daemon prince or a chaos spawn if slain, so that character has more durability than you see at first glance.

The Blood Secrator, the Skull Grinder, the chaos warshrine, and the blood stoker all have good buffs.

The blood reavers need a totem (so bring a blood secrator or a war shrine or both).

Khorne Blood Bound is a buff synergy army, so you want to maximize your buffs. The basic Goreblade Warband from the starter set is surprisingly good.

The Mighty Lord doesn't have a great buff, but he can unbind spells, and he has a 1/3 chance to instant kill a multi-wound monster or hero if he does a wound with his axe.

The slaughter priest is good for forcing an enemy unit to leave their army and run towards your army where it can be slaughtered while its friends watch helplessly.

So I've bought some stuff since I started this thread. Here's where my army stands at the moment:

1 Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount
1 Sorcerer Lord (Runestaff)
1 Bloodsecrator
1 Chaos Chariot (Chaos Greatblade)
5 Chaos Knights (Glaives)
12 Warriors (single weapon + rune shield)
20 Marauders (Axe + Darkwood Shield)

I just finished painting my warriors. Sorcerer Lord and Bloodsecrator next. Just got the Marauders, so I haven't even started assembling yet. I figure this is enough to start really learning the game mechanics. I have some thoughts about what I plan on adding down the road, but I paint slow, and if I keep buying stuff, nothing will get finished, lol.
