OK here's where it all starts I have no where to go in 40k by that I mean there is nothing I want to play paint or collect have collected all army's at one point to one degree or another and bored with it all.

Have flicked through some of the books for 30k and liked some of the ideas but mostly it's the models I am in love with even though I am not a fan of forge world resin or prices. So stuck with not having a clue what force to collect or if in fact I should bother at all.

Here's what I have narrowed it down to (I use the word narrowed loosely)
Mechanicum
Solar auxiliary
Death guard
Night lords
Emperors children
Word bearers

Is 30k worth my time and money ? Considering the costs to get into it.
I figure marines would be cheapest to start due to the plastic box but something about the auxiliary and mechanicum just look better to me

Working on it

Well, if you do, say Death Guard, and take a Praevian (Centurion Consul) you can also take certain Mechanicum units. So you could do that, and have an Allied Detachment of Solar Auxilia.

That way you have all 3 in one list with out dropping to much money on either faction.

This will give you time to see which faction you like the most and to expand on it

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator

I am a huge fan of the Legion lists, Rites of War, special units, etc...., but after playing with the Taghmata Omnissiah list I found my army of choice. Lots of firepower, resilent and tons of extra abilities/ goodies/ characters.

were I you, I'd look into the fluff. 30k is a game revolving around fluff rather then bringing what's good. Mechanicum is arguably the cheapest army to build (you need less, most of their models are priced decently for how many points they are. Auxillia are the opposite, but I love the models ). Once you've dove through the fluff of the guys you've narrowed it down to, compare the models, paint scheme, and what playstyle you wanna do. Slow and Shooty: DG, Auxilia, or certain mechanicum. Fast and stabby: EC, Night lords, other forms of mechanicum. etc. etc.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

It seems to me that you should focus on what feels right to you. It's much worse to half-heartedly go for the cheaper option and then regret it than it is to just go for what you really want.

It isn't like you have to decide right this instant, anyway. Taking a week to consider what you like and what makes sense for you to do should absolutely be affordable.

Read the first two books today and have book 3 and 4 to read tomorrow.

The game does seem very interesting to me so far the death gaurd are winning out 3 and 4 should be interesting read tomorrow think it's now down to death guard mechanicum and solar auxiliary.

Have decided on iron hands
Bought a box of battle at calth or what ever its called

Working out the paint scheme so far people have told me its charcoal, metallic green and gun metal and one saying they are black. Yes I admit I am colour blind so confused on colour of them as although they look black in 40k 30k looks different hence why I asked people what colour they thought the 30k stuff was.
So any help here would be great.

Was thinking black with gun metal mixed in might work prob 1:3 mix but have to see.

I need more assault guns for the contempter thinking 3 with 2 assault guns each just because it would look great

But any way if you could all get back to me on the primary colour of the iron hands armour would be good thanks

well there's 2 basic ways to do it:

Black, with silver trims

OR

slightly metalic black, with silver trims.

Your best bet if you wanted to be '100% sure' going by FWs standards, email them and ask, they usually respond fairly quickly. Where did you hear that they had green in them?

Gorgan terminators and parts of the shields on the troops look metalic green well to me the gorgan terminators look a metallic green/ rust sort of colour.

Think will go with slight metalic black but i dont think the forge world stuff looks black. Watched the miniwargaming vid on painting them and it didn't look right looked to much like iron warrior's. But they did a a nice metallic black could have done with maybe bit more silver mixed in but not bad at all.

Hmm looking at the Horus heresy book doesn't look black there ether. Page 74 book 2 tact marine looks charcoal grey, black left hand shoulder silver left hand, black left knee, black belt buckle, black arm brace on right hand and silver over the edges of shoulder pads helmet and so on. I know drawings will be different to painting but I am not so sure the more I look the more its not black armour as primary colour.

Will email forge world see if they will shed any light on it.

Let's hope they reply

death guard was my first hoice as a chapter but after reading up on a lot or rules and stuff Iron hands seems the better choice .

following reasons
1) -1st to any weapon hitting them
2) take automata as lites
3) better looking contemptor model
4) can run or move flat out while the death guard cant

although I do love the terminator models for the death gaurd and there primarch just think iron hands is a better fit for me personally

1) Straight cheese in exchange, DG are immune to fear and auto pass pinning, we also don't give a damn about moving slowly through cover
2) Everyone can take automata in their HS slot (which has a lot less competition then the elite slot does)
3) 'cause DG don't care about that lame pageantry. only loosers dress up their armor
4) DG can run and flat out so long as they don't use a certain RoW (with that same RoW we cause -1 T the first round of combat)

DG's specials are better, Iron hands are fit for personalities who don't have living primarchs, like tanks, and hate having friends (cough -1 to incoming fire Strength cough)

I wonder if TS will be as durable

And why not do SL and get both DG and IW?

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator

@OP: If you enjoy kitbashing and converting, Word Bearers might be a good army for you.

Like you, I think alot of the forgeworl sculpts are good, but I won't pay forgeworld prices, especially for resin. So far, my entire army is made up from plastic parts mixed from 40k Space Marine, Chaos Space Marines, and Chaos Daemon bits, as well as some Necrons bits here and there.

Anywho, Word Bearers are a fun army for kitbasjing, and they are also very fun to play on the board...lots of ways you can take a WB army.

(Sorry, just now noticed you settled on IH...another good choice )

Lol it wasn't an attack on dg by the way.
I don't think DG specials are better at all although it is surprising that IH troops are more survivable

To be honest still not set in stone but i did painted up the box sets Chaplin in IH colours (yes I know they don't use them but good test model) painted in a grey, boltgun, metallic black kind of way I like it but I am stuck still on chapter next is a test model for DG. Which ever model I like at the end is the army I will collect but it has been bloody tuff to pick an army.

Jasper76
I did consider the word bearers but to be honest tired of red space marines and deamon possessed stuff. No such thing as picked an army lol until first squad is finished lol .

I do admit the cost of forge world stuff is bit on the ludicrous side never been a fan of resin myself
