Hi all my name is Rich and I live with my wife and two daughters in Portsmouth UK. Somehow I have managed to get to the age of 31 having never even glanced at Warhammer 40k or any GW games but as of a week and a half ago I am hooked

My cousin decided to get his son into it who is 9 as he wants him to have a hobby to invest some of his free time into and so they took a trip to GW in Portsmouth and were given a free model to take away and construct/paint. I actually visited the night they were painting the little space marine and have to admit it was a lot more fun than I had expected it to be. Next thing I know were all in GW Portsmouth and I have spent over £200 getting paints, brushes, cutters, Codex and a Necron Army (I think they look awesome) plus a Doom Scythe my cousin I think spent even more lol..

Yesterday I finally sat down to start constructing just the Necron warriors which I have to admit was quite tricky with them all having ball joints. Managed to get all 12 done in about 2 hours (I was going very slowly) Then today I have managed to get 4 of them painted. To what standard I have no idea they look good to me but I have no metric to measure them by

Anyway it dawned on me while driving to pick my daughter up from nursery about an hour ago that I should maybe see if there is a forum I can join to get some tips for painting and share info etc and so here I am.

Pls though, take it easy with me, literally until a week and a half ago I didn't even know about any of this stuff and am still yet to actually play my first game :(

Good man. Welcome!

Necrons are cool, think you made a good choice. Nice and quick to paint too! What did your cousin go for?

Hi Tommohawk, welcome to Dakka!

You've come to the right place - you'll get plenty of support, discussion, answers etc here. I've been on Dakka for about 9 months and it's great! Pop in to the P&M section to see what other people are doing and to see some tutorials. I'd even recommend starting your own blog in there - it's not as daunting as it seems, and it's a great way to get feedback on your painting. You'll be amazed at how quickly you improve.

I've never built Necrons (just have a few second hand ones for conversions), but 2 hours to build 12 doesn't seem too slow to me. It's not something you want to rush!

And then I see you already have posted in the P&M showcase! I should have checked first

Looking good (I was going to say looking good for a first attempt, but actually I wouldn't have guessed it was a first attempt!). As others have said, paint the stand and you're good to go!

Hi Tommohawk welcome to the wonderful world of 40K lol be ready to spend a lot more! The GW store was probably a good place to start and get up and running but FYI you can buy the same items for less at an independent retailer. I do go to the official store occasionally to have a nose (would go more I guess if there was one nearby), maybe buy the odd item, but generally a well known auction site or a 3rd party retailer can be your friend.
Necrons are currently very powerful btw, good choice! I don't play them but I regularly get my ass handed to me by my mate who fields them.

P.S. I joined a few forums for 40K but this is by far the best!

Welcome, I hope you enjoy your time spent learning, and posting.
Definitely see if you can get a few games in with staff at your local gw. They are trained to teach very effectively, and it helps a LOT early on.

Have a look at the painting and modeling sections of the forum for inspiration. Your models can be customized infinitely.

Thank you all for the welcomes

@Buttery Commissar Will try and get down to the GW and have a tutorial once the army is painted for sure

@Ashley_Chaos Appreciate the advice regarding the cheapest locations to pick the models up, Do GW ever have sales of any type?

@Crispy78 My cousin went for the Dark Vengeance Box which contained 2 small armies I believe and also he bought a Predator tank (May have this completely wrong). I also bought a Doom Scythe but haven't braved putting this one together yet I went for the Necros purely as I liked the look of the futuristic and metallic style they have(Possibly the wrong reasons ), to hear they are quite a good army is just a bonus

@Whittlesey40K Good to hear that its a good community and the idea of starting a blog has definitely got me thinking. I like the idea of getting feedback esp wrt the painting as I really want to improve on it and get it to a high standard. Thanks for the complement on the first model but If I'm honest I was quite disappointed once I saw it that close up. Realised I missed a lot of areas and also wasn't aware of taking the mould lines etc off but it is all learning and the feedback is invaluable with lots to implement into the painting already just from the picture I posted..

And the stand That seems to be a common theme lol I will be painting it for sure now Not fixed on a colour ye though.

Again thanks all for the welcomes.

Sales direct from GW are rare tbh, some of the boxsets make the individual models a lot cheaper and you can buy GW products from 3rd party sites at a percentage off the rrp. Really though the price is much of a muchness wherever you buy it, at least at a store you can get some sound advice on army building and tbh the fact you've given them custom they'll be more than happy to teach you get a grip on the rules. Keep at the game, it will be very confusing at first ,not gunna lie, but get a few games under your belt and you'll soon pick it up and be loving it

Personally I've found Wayland Games to be pretty good, with generally 20-25% off RRP. E.g. currently the box of Necron Warriors is £16.50 (GW's price is £22). Free postage over £30. The downside is I've found delivery to be pretty slow. I believe they generally order from GW as orders come in, rather than keep stock.

Gifts for Geeks have a similar discount (Cron Warriors are currently £17.80), but free postage is only over £80. In my experience, delivery is much faster.

Also watch out for GW's modelling supplies. For example, their Citadel Fine Detail Cutters are £20. Look on eBay and you'll see similar ones for £5-10. Talys (good source of painting knowledge and inspirational examples of painted models) posted this comparison of cutters a while back http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/639547.page. But generally just look out for GW's modelling supplies - you can usually find better for cheaper elsewhere.

Welcome to our addiction!

Good choice with Necrons, they are an awesome army. They can be powerful with just a little sprinkling of cheese, but non of the overpowering cheese that Eldar and Tau have.

I myself started getting into 40k probably around your age when my friend Crispy78 and I decided to give it a go. We haven't looked back since. There is such a vast world of books and story to read through, the game itself is good fun and it can be quite relaxing to chill painting whilst having music on or a bit of telly in the background.

I use my nearest GW store in Southampton to get paints, but have found that there are a few online retailers that sell some of the kits (especially the bigger ones) a bit cheaper. Darksphere is one of them (also giftsforgeeks, gamingfigures, waylandgames to name a few), so certainly worth checking out the Necron section on some of those.

Here is the Darksphere site.
https://www.darksphere.co.uk/pgc.php?c=212

Darksphere have always been excellent whenever I have ordered from them.

Anyhow, best of luck, you will have a great time!

Welcome to 40k, When just starting out, I found one of the most fun things to do, is read some fluff (background story) about your army, and make up a story about your units.

-Me: Don't tell the commissar but i left my Imperial Infantrymans Uplifting Primer at home, but I do carry a folded Texas flag behind my front plate.
-Friend: Texas flag gives you AV14 all around.

Necrons are a great choice. definitely check out you tube. I know there are videos out there of people speed painting the regular troops. Saves you time and they also still look really good.
