Hey all

I like painting helmets and skulls on spikes and as trophies, so I picked up the 40k basing kit to have some on the bases as well! (and there are lots of good bits in there)

But, The resin is just a bit too thick at the bottom (a picture shows one resting on a base below)

While it is acceptable especially after adding the troop model it would help to be able to shave a few millimeters off,

I started with a file and could use it to trim the sides but hardly makes a dent in the flat of the resin even with a good amount of hard filing

I tried 40 grain sandpaper and it seemed to be breaking bits off my sandpaper rather than sanding down, haha

Anyone have advice on the right way to approach this?

You could get yourself a Dremel. It would make short work of that. Also they come with a ton of different bits and attachments. You can buff, sand, engrave, cut, etc with them so I'm sure it would come in handy outside of modeling.

i usually stick small stones (you get some in that kit) and sand and other detritus around the base decoration. this helps it blend into a nice looking base. because youre going to want to put more stuff than just that on your bases anyway really.

I think its made thick like that because the heads is on a rock or stone.

Instead of grinding it down just drill a hole in yer base and shove it in with a bit of glue to the height that you want it at ..simple

Thanks for all the replies and differing opinions. I am using rocks from the kit on my bases now but, I wanted to place this helmet in front of a Standard Bearer, and without lowering the height the helm is just a bit too high off the ground - closer to his knee would be better in my opinion. I will test with drilling the base but a Dremel is probably a good investment to consider.
