Subject: Making physical wear in models before painting.
All the time, tiny nicks and scrapes. Bigger weld lines, bullet holes, I've been known to do a melta hit with molten metal dripping out of it as well. repaired armour patches. Painting damage is only really for shallow scrapes and worn paint.

I used to do nicks physically but have not come to the conclusion that proper painting generally looks better IMO and is less risky. Ill still pinvise some projectile damage sometimes though.
GW's black Gobbo actually had a whole article on how to model battle damage, even the different kinds of wear and tear (like the scratches from a Tyranid beast is very different from a plasma gun graze)
