Hello, this is my first post on the forum . I am still relatively new to wh 40k , I started out about 6 months ago by sharing the DV starter with a friend, he took the chaos while I picked the Dark angels. Since than I've gotten myself acquainted with the DA fluff and I must say I don't really like them all that much. Now my question is: can I field a fallen army that is not csm, meaning the terran-born guys who just wanted to keep crusading across the galaxy and felt betrayed by the Lion. Any help is appreciated, I currently own just the DV set but intend to invest some more as soon as I get the next paycheck.

So you've discovered a cool faction is full of total asshats. Welcome to 40k.

There's really no documented evidence of how the Fallen deploy. Usually I'd expect them to be either individual marines or small teams scattered throughout other CSM warbands, but there's absolutely nothing to I say they wouldn't deploy en-mass to achieve some dark aim.

I would be inclined to take inspiration from the 30k Legions and Chaos Marines, but to build them as a Dark Angels army, so think about including Tactical Squads with Bolters and no special or heavy weapons, Rhinos rather than Razorbacks, one or two epic heroes with all the trimmings, perhaps an Assault Squad in a basic Land Raider (rather than Deathwing in a Crusader because both are too modern).

Avoid Scouts, Ravenwing and Deathwing (unless you can be really clever with your explanations), and perhaps look at some Forge World Relic vehicles.

Also, get jiggy with your painting and modelling. Crusade-era Dark Angels had black armour with their own proprietary markings and designs (extra points for doing freehand black-and-white checks). Use Company Veterans for squad leaders, but rough up the robes and armour a bit to make them look old or scavenged, give them extra gear like ammo belts, trophies, defaced insignia and such.

And Cypher, while a bit cliché, is one cool cat, daddio.

Thank you for the input. Would it be possible to deploy some IG stuff alongside them, ie people whom they indoctrinated?

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

The best way to go about this would be to field a CSM army but with all the marines painted as fallen angels, then follow what spineguy said. This is because Cypher, a must have in any fallen army, cannot ally with dark angels.
As for guard, you could run a renegade detachment with your fallen: they are pretty much guard but with some extra chaos stuff and a lesser ability to take hundreds of tanks. Also renegades ally with chaos.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Although at 500pts it would be hard to fit a guard detachment in.

Is it possible for the fallen to be just renegades instead of csms?

I'd say it's very likely that a Fallen warband would indenture some Guard or mercenaries to be their support. I'm inclined to agree with Happyface, though, that getting such a thing to work at 500pts is a tall order. Perhaps that could be done at a later date to expand the force

It must be said that And They Shall Know No Fear is a problem. Heresy-era Marines didn't have any such notion, but perhaps 10, 000 year-old Veterans would naturally have developed something similar.

I would argue that very few Chaos Marines start off intending to worship Chaos. Most take their first steps along that road through more subtle things like doubt and resentment, which certain influences can gradually capitalise on. So yes, it's possible to represent non-Chaos forces using the CSM codex. You might event want to look at the Tyrant's Legion list from Forge World and see what you can get from that.

Basically, it's all about your taste and what you envision the Fallen as.

Well there are some who believe that the Fallen were the ones Loyal to the Emperor and it was the Lion who turned. Maybe one day the fluff will settle this. You can take any side of the story you want. I don't know how legal it would be, but maybe you could field a small Fallen army using 30k rules?

Better still, build an army you like and stat them up using several different codices. Not every club or opponent will be happy with you using 30k rules in 40k (they have the potential to be slightly over-powered), so it's best to be on the safe side.

Ty guys, quite insightful, I will probably refrain myself from building this army for now. When I first posted this I intended just to slightly repaint my DA force and add some veterans, vehicles and cypher , but alas, now I realise that building such a list would require buying some forge world models and whatnot. I'll keep and expand my angels for now although in the future I certainly will at least attempt to assemble some fallen. Again, thank you all for the insights.

That's a shame, Kardinal. It would have been nice to see an alternative army going together. Bear in mind that a 500pt Marine army is unlikely to consist of more than 20 models, so I doubt it would have been difficult to do.

Also, you woudn't need to buy much at all from Forge World at the lower level. Fallen, like most Chaos Marines, will scavenge or steal most of their kit, so it's likely that it will be mostly Imperial, just stripped of its symbols.

Anyway, sit on the plan for a while. The thing to remember about this hobby is that it's a leisurely activity and you should never feel obliged to engage in a way that you don't find enjoyable.

But those fw models look too damn nice
I will keep fiddling with the idea and will post a possible list if I manage to come up with one.

Cool. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with.

I've been having a lot of free time at work today so far so I've been poking around battle scribe a bit.
I've used the Lost and damned, the DA and the csm codex data and this is what I've fit in:

HQ: Cypher

Troops:
+10 man Renegade infantry veterans
-8x /w lasgun, frags and close combat
-1x /w meltagun
-1x /w grenade launcher
- all with carpace

+10 man csm tactical squad
-1x aspiring champ /w boltgun, power sword and melta bombs
-9x csm /w boltgun, pistol and krak nades
+ vanilla Rhino

Keep in mind, I am a total newb, but hey, I am here to learn

Small addendum: would it be possible to take a 30k fitted sm squad instead of the csm?

That looks strong. Cypher will be amazing in small games.
