So this is my first army and it's heavily weighted towards being inexpensive. I'd rather not use two squads of necrons like I've seen in most other lists but if it's the best thing to do at this point total I'm open to try it.

here's my current list:

overlord with orb and warscythe

12 necron warriors

5 lychguards

cryptek+chronometron

Added up I come out to 496 and I feel as though I have a decent amount of support as well as ranged and close quarters damage.

So what do you think? Competitive or nah. Any additions or changes you would make to make it a little simpler to play or to make it more competitive?

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear the murder is it still a conspiracy?

Unless you take two units of troops, your list will be unbound. Since you're a new player, people might be fine with playing unbound, but don't make a habit out of it since many people dislike it. Unbound also means you lose the objective secured bonus on your troops, which means you will be at a pretty big disadvantage if you play with objectives. In my opinion your list is rather hq heavy for the points level. If you don't want to play with two warrior squads, I highly suggest using the new retribution phalanx. It is your only option for a battle forged, single troops choice army. It consists of an overlord, one unit of necron Warriors, one unit of scarabs, and a triarch stalker. The biggest disadvantage is that you will need to buy the triarch stalker. The formation has a bonus that allows you to bring back your warrior and scarab squads. When one of the squads is fully wiped out, you can set it up again as long as you do so within 3 inches of the overlord (so if he dies, you can't resurrect the other units). You won't get objective secured, but you will have a small battle forged army with only one troops choice.

Thanks very much! that actually works out much better and saves me two dollars. which I guess buys me a can of soda when I decide to go play. lol

Is the triarch stalker something I can use in a later list at say, 1000 points?

Good luck, if you haven't bought the models yet definitely buy the necron starter pack (unless you can get the models on the cheap or want to support your flgs). The actual formation rules can only be found in that pack, and its best to have the official rules on hand in case there are any discrepancies.

As to your question, yes, the triarch stalker can be fantastic in larger lists because it has good weapon options and gives a +1 ballistic skill bonus to every non-vehicle unit within six inches of it, allowing you to really increase the firepower of your army. But in larger points games, it is really important not to run the triarch stalker without lots of other vehicles. The reason being the stalker is sadly probably the flimsiest vehicle in the necron codex (3 hullpoints, open topped, no jink, and armor 11 after it recieves a penatrating hit). Luckily you can run stalkers in squadrons of up to three, and their good offensive and support potential make them worth their points if they can survive for a few turns.
