So I am considering buying the new Deathwatch box set, but I have a problem. These days I am mostly in the hobby for painting, rather than gaming. I am a very slow painter. If I get 20 minis painted in a year then I have done well. The Deathwatch game then represents 2 or 3 years of painting
But what if something better comes out next month? I have always been more of a fantasy guy and the upcoming Aos game could be amazing or it could just be more Stormcast. Either I buy it too and end up with a cupboard of unpainted minis or I buy nothing. I already have house full of my kids' toys so I am trying to limit myself to only buying something when I have finished painting my previous purchase.
The second problem is that my motivation to paint goes way down when something comes out which is better than the model I am currently painting.
This problem is exacerbated by GW's one week info policy. My biggest wish for the new improved gw is that they start previewing stuff. If I knew what was coming in the next 3 or 4 months I would feel much happier about putting my money down.
So does anyone else have this problem? How do you plan your purchases?

I would just wait and buy the bits from an eBay seller.

For myself I buy and worry about a place to put it after I am a slow painter also, sometimes I even play with unpainted models :0.
Sounds like if your not playing then you don't really need to get anything when it comes out and can wait for latter.
Your motivation going down when something new comes out is probably a good problem to work on.
If it takes you years to paint a box like that it's inevitable you will find new things to paint in the hobby.
Maybe you should find another range where you can get a single miniture every month of so and build up a individual group. Skirmish games are perfect for this.

Useful advice, but I am more interested in what other people do. Everyone has a limiting factor, whether it is time or money. this is an involving, time consuming expensive hobby and I am curious how people decide what to buy next. Do you plan? Do you have a gaming budget? I live in Japan now which is why I don't play much anymore, but something like an upcoming tournament or painting contest would be good motivation.

Well there are more board gamers in Japan than wargamers so it should be easier to get a game of that.
Went to Game market in Kobe yesterday and it was quite busy, i almost bought rum and bones and the Aliens Vs predator boxed set.

Hmm, I don't really plan or limit myself that much. I am a crazy person with 12 wraith Knights :0
So for me I don't really get so much Decision Paralysis, more time just deciding on the order and what I want most.
I have been thinking of starting a painting blog again myself to keep my own hobby purchasing in order. And I will admit the new cultists have a nostalgic cool factor to me, but I don't think it's worth agonising over.

I only buy the things that I really want (as opposed to "allofthethings" or "allthepretties" ).
Do I set a budget? Yes, but when there isn't a company out that has a product line where I love everything enough to want to get it, it's not so much of an issue.
I've never had gaming stuff as the result of "gifts" for christmas or birthdays - all my gaming stuff was paid for with my own money, from my jobs (unlike a lot of 40k players, I couldn't play that game at school because the game didn't exist when I was at school - it came around after I finished school).
Not having a very well paying job, meant I either saved for something I really wanted, or I didn't get it. After enough years, this habit became ingrained.
I flinch at spending more than $100 in one hit on gaming stuff to this day. I haven't been into a GW store in a couple of years as a result.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

You could say the same if you are playing!

I hear that. I never went for the thing of buying a whole army, or a big chunk of it, in one go; whether GW or otherwise. £95 on the Dropfleet Commander KS has been my biggest single spend, by some margin. The rumoured price of Overkill is making me sweat too, but discounters and the prospect of swapping or selling the marines helps there.
